So this looks like "we deserve this because we do things the right way but no one loves us but you really really should love us."

I'll backtrack a bit on fan culture. Sure fans do have a culture but I think the culture is more defined in fan bases that are more regional than national. I think for Red Sox and Yankee fans if you live in Kansas you're likely to have a much different impression of what a Red Sox fan who has spent his whole life living in the midwest than one who grew up in southie. Strangely enough, well it isn't strange the history of the two franchises dictate this, but Red Sox fans in New England are impatient people who hate everyone and everything and are never satisfied. However, Yankee fans that I know from NY are always confident that they will win the world series and every single signing is the best signing. I have found though that Red Sox fans outside of New England are generally happy with any and everything but Yankee fans outside of NY are impatient and have a chip on their shoulders.

I don't think to many of us here are going to argue that's the vibe given off by a lot of the Royals fan base this year. That's the whole KU validation thing I was talking about. Cardinals vibe is we're the best and if you don't love us you're a hater.

And yes, that's the exact culture I was referring to with the Red Sox.

it feels good not to belong to a fan base.

actually the front-loaded/back-loadedness of the different contracts would also dramatically change their values, so we probably can't make any assumptions on the value of the opt outs (for that matter, the stl and wash contracts may have had opt outs as well).

15, then 21.5 and 21.5 in the first 3 years.  plus a 20 signing bonus.  so, 78 over the first three years.  hugely front-loaded, no wonder he took that deal.

signing bonus is deferred forever, though, so probably really more like 12-15 than 20.

The Cueto contract seems to be well below market value, has anyone seen a sabermetrics breakdown confirming or denying this?

seems like he was pretty aggressively discounted because his peripherals aren't as good as his actuals, his elbow is the subject of rumor and he's kind of a weirdo.

he also got a two year opt out, which cost him a fair bit off the top line, i'm sure.

sox prolly coming for gordon or cespedes now, right?  they can't be making a mortgage the future trade like that to get a win or two over .500.  they've got to have more moves coming.  they've got crap for corner outfielders and just sold thompson.  they've also got crap for a first baseman.  logically, they've got to improve prolly at least two of those spots.  makes the most sense to sign the fa corner outfielder and try to get a cheap first baseman to fill in.  because there aren't many good cheap corner outfielders.

Rules Changes confirmed on 2nd base takeout plays:

Baserunner must slide before the base.  No rolling blocks.  Must be within reach of base and make effort to stay on base following slide.  Can't change direction of slide purposefully to hit the fielder.

Runner and batter out for violation  :surprised:

But... neighborhood play is changed where 2nd basemen has to stay on 2nd during a turn.   :surprised:

Both are reviewable.. so much for pace of play.

Yea I hate that common sense has gone out the window and they have to add netting because of it. If you have close seats pay attention to the rough ridin' game. If you have children, either don't sit close or teach them to pay attention to the rough ridin' game.

Yeah. I mean sure, parents and kids should be watching the game, but I really don't want to see some kid die because MLB is too stupid to put up nets.

Nets are fine at certain spots. If I had kids I'd always sit behind the netting. But at a certain point they should be unnecessary

The woman nearly killed at Fenway wasn't on her phone, they need to extend the nets like at The K. I hope they don't wait until someone dies like what happened in the NHL.
