I think it took me 4 failed attempts to get into The Wire before it stuck. Problem being that I almost always am multitasking with the TV on, and the show takes about 3 or 4 episodes of slow-burn world building before you can get into it. You actually have to pay attention.

I think I’ve said this before here, but I’ve gotten 5-6 episodes into The Wire & I just can’t keep going. It’s like a TBS knock off of what everyone claims it’s supposed to be.

I also did my future self if favor by not watching GOT until a few months before the final season started, so that was a good few months of catching up right into the end.

The Wire, like most David Simon shows, is an incredibly slow burn. He takes a lot of time with character development that very much pays off later. I didn't watch the wire while it was on the air, I can't imagine many did. Back then HBO didn't give a solitary crap about ratings, they wanted Emmys. The show became a cult hit because the buzz eventually became the reason to watch, so there was something to gain by waiting it out. It's also worth noting that the wire became a cult hit before streaming platforms were so prevalent. Now there are so many options that it's really hard to ask someone to sit through 2/3 of a season of character development.

I read the book back in the 90s and then saw the movie starring Harrison Ford and this series is much better than the movie was.
