Yes, and especially if one of you earns way more than the other.

That being said, if you're getting a ton back, you might want to reduce your deductions, getting a lot back is not the goal, the goal should be getting as much out of your paycheck and only getting a little back. I'm not a fire breathing anti-gubment type, but time value of money says you should be getting more per paycheck and less on the return is better than some fat, no interest yielded government holding your money for free refund.

I don't think they withhold taxes on unemployment benefits, so this probably actually hurt the potential of "the return"

Taxes blow. My effective federal income tax rate (total tax / AGI) hit 20% this year. Add in FICA, state, real and personal property, nanny, and sales tax and I'm paying more than 40% of every dollar earned to the Man. Factor in all the corporate taxes passed along to me in the prices I pay for goods and services, and it's likely closer to 50%. What a system.
