Let's Talk about Branding
« on: March 06, 2014, 10:41:43 AM »
LSU announced recently that their "Toonces" logo is going to be phased out.  And it got me to thinking.  For a pretty accomplished athletic department, LSU has some really terrible branding.

They came out with this in the early 2000s

Then switched over to this:

Which still looks pretty ridiculous.

And now, i assume they're going to incorporate the thing on their basketball court:

GAH!

The eye on the football field is so cool and iconic.  The LSU font is neat too.  Why do they always try to incorporate some bizarre tigerface logo?

Apparently, Illinois is going to unveil a new branding at the spring game.  In the wake of the Chief debacle, Illinois has struggled to really find an identity.  It's such a weird dynamic.  Maybe bread can chime in here, but people are absolutely bonkers about the Chief logo and it'd been around forever.  I'm not saying they should have kept it, but now all that's left is some sterile, nondescript I.

Sometimes there's no I at all.

What a mess.

because they are the Tigers?
But each "main logo" they have turns out to be some absurdly crude drawing of a tiger.

Missouri doesn't have the best branding in the world (IMHO), but at least their tiger looks put together and sleek.

Clemson's brand is instantly recognizable.

LSU's branding over the years is just weird:

In my opinion, they should just stick with the eye logo.

They should just do a tiger striped LSU and call it a day.

Our bitches have done an excellent job with their branding IMO.  They have a simple logo, a hand gesture that sort of mimics the logo and a saying that goes along with it.

The Tiger eye is one of the best logos, I agree they should just stick with that.

When it comes to Tiger logos with the full head, Mizzou has done a good job. I like their look now.

I have always liked lsu (purple bros) and I like all their Tigers. The eye looks good on a field, but not so much on a hoodie

They also have had an issue where they had nicknames not the tigers (Bayou Bengals, Bengals) but they have gone away from that. I generally don't like their tiger head logos cause they are too complex. Mizzou is better, but to me Cincy gets it right

Generally I am a big proponent of simpler = better with logos. The best logos are like the powercat, Apple's bitten apple, Ford, Chevy, etc. All of those logos are in general simple, clean, and effective. Those LSU tiger faces above are none all those things, and the reason the tiger eye logo does work is it is fairly simple, looks clean, and very effective.

Also, while Nebrasky's N and Michigan's M are very effective, they seems like cops outs, but that's just me.

Good points, I agree with simple, but distinguishable. Its got to be much tougher to be different with Tigers since there are so many, another reason why LSU's Tiger's eye makes more sense to me since it is unique.

How about our KSU Wildcats?  That new hand symbol that raises awareness for Cerebral Palsy is very socially conscious.  I like that.

I'm so glad we have a national brand with the powercat and k-state. That's something to be thankful for and I am.

Meh.  A lot of schools just have letters.   If that's what they want to do I'm fine with it.  I wouldn't call the chief situation a debacle.  It was accepted for a long time and then it was racist and they dropped it.  Would have been pretty difficult for them to see that one coming decades ago whenever they came up with it (I don't really know).  I wasn't partial personally and certainly not to that fuckface they had dancing around all the time.  Huge embarrassment that guy.

Nobody gives a crap about Illinois' logo anyway.  Might as well be an I or the word.  Not embarrassing.
My prescience is fully engorged.  It throbs with righteous accuracy.  I am sated.
