40 hours a week
« on: February 21, 2014, 12:25:33 PM »
Why 40 hours? What if you're not self employed and can get crap done before that time.. What's the point in making people stay :dunno:

My experience is that if you get more than 40yrs worth of stuff done in a week, you get given more than 40hrs worth of work.  If you get that done in a week, you get promoted.  Rinse/Repeat.

Well heres and example: y-l_a gf is an accountant so she works terrible hours JAN-APR but then still has to put in 40 hrs the rest of the year even though sometimes there isn't work.. just seems silly

She should start her own biz, still work like mad Jan-Apr, then work 4 days/wk the rest of the year or pick up enough accts to fill out the week on her own.

Profit.

Acctg for Small Biz customers is a good example of low overhead biz that should be reasonable enough to start up.  Especially after doing it a few yrs for another firm if that firm lets her deal with the same customers for weekly/monthly payroll.

If they are CPAs at that age they are (or better be)

All my friends are CPAs, and I even have trouble telling them apart sometimes.

I travel a lot for work about 12 weeks of the year, and typically put in ~60 hours per week when I do. The rest of the year I am still expected to work 8-5. It is what it is.

If y-l_agf doesn't like it she should either open her own firm or pick a new profession. I bet that those other 8 months of the year are pretty stress-free.

That's stupid so it's a good thing I'm here to tell her what to do.  Tell her to get her CPA if she has not already done so and then put in at least 3-5 years in public accounting.  My wife did seven years at Grant Thornton....yes it was like a prison sentence, sometimes 90 hours a week.  She made it to Senior Tax Manager before she gave up the partner track and quit to actually have time with her family.

Next go get a job for a private company as some sort of in house management accountant, make $100,000+ a year and work 35 hours a week with no busy season.  Then use that money to buy a crap load of tanktops.  Problem solved

Every single one of your friends is an accountant?

7 years at Grant Thornton probably feels like a lifetime.
