Songs/Artists you come back to
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:56:26 PM »
I grew up listening to an absurd amount of Motown and Bob Dylan.  Like my dad had all of these on records, then went out in like 1990 and bought a redic 5 disc CD changer to his hi-fi setup and bought what had to have been like $1000 worth of CDs.  He bought a Beatles box set, a Motown box set, a bunch of Aretha, a Mahalia Jackson gospel box set, the entire Bob Dylan catalogue and a bunch of other stuff.

Anyways, I never could hate Motown, but I kind of ended up hating the Beatles and Bob Dylan for awhile because I just thought they were kind of played out.  I needed to come back to them and rediscover them on my own.  The only reason I got back in to Dylan was Jimi Hendrix had some quote about Highway 61 Revisited and so I went back and listened to it again.

Anyway, I got back in to Otis Redding again today and damn.  He has a really great voice and wrote some nice arrangements, and I thought he was overrated.  I was wrong.

Who have you come back to?  What songs have you come back to?

to build off this though, my parents (mostly dad) listened to mostly country when i was growing up, and my first exposure to punk music though green day's kerplunk and offspring's smash were life changing moments for me.  my uncle got me both of them for christmas when i was in 4th grade it and i was in love.  while i don't listen to either very often anymore, both hold a special place in my heart.

A lot of the stuff my mom and dad had on cassettes while I was growing up that we would listen to in the car.  Jackson Browne, Van Morrisson, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, John Hiatt, and Greatful Dead.  All of those bring some pretty strong memories up and are good music on their own too.

Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson and the Beatles are all of my fairly obvious older ones.  A couple times a year when I have to drive a ways, I will go through The Hold Steady's discography.  They aren't from the way back machine or anything but were probably the soundtrack from my college years.

Pearl Jam ten

I didn't fully appreciate how good it was when it came out.  It is mindblowingly fantastic from start to finish

There will never, ever be another band above Pearl Jam for me, and 10 is the reason.

...But, to answer the original post, I'd say the Beatles are one that I am revisiting a bit.

Billy Squire, Prince and Montrose will never get old.  Of course old school Celtic Frost is the gold standard.
