Today the Smart pick is the Marcus from Manhattan; OSU ADV
« on: January 04, 2014, 08:11:46 PM »

Before the game some of my chief keys were K-State's ability to shoot 3s, force TOs, and hit the offensive glass. Midway through the 2nd half it appeared the OSU interior defense and K-State's inability to hit key FTs would be the difference. However, as luck would have it, the Cats finished down the stretch, owned the offensive glass in the 2nd half, and finished making the big FTs.

Foster is a big stud, efficient scoring, big shots and quickly growing into a leader on the floor.

Thomas' 25 minutes were huge, especially his defense on the other Marcus on the floor, plus a nice 5 assists and some big finishes at the rim attacking the basket.

Gip with a quiet double double and two huge FTs while finally finishing at the rim down the stretch.

Nino stepped up huge with Shane in foul trouble and did an excellent job doing Nino things.

Then nice role minutes from Westicles and Will.

All nice to do on a night where Shane struggles with foul trouble and only plays 17 minutes.

This team is fun and will win some games in this league. Protect the home floor (7-2 seems very doable) and win 3 (at least) on the road and see what happens.

Gottlieb mentioned in a tweet that we are now running a variation of the motion with more ball screens to compliment our current squad.  Can you explain that?

Pretty great to beat No. 6 when struggling to shoot the ball. Love to see the team, especially stem the tide when Shane was out in the first half.

Great win.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

oscar seems to have added a lot more ball screens to the offense, which is probably a good move. We have many more guys that can go ahead and get shots on their own or attack the basket. Last year the offense was built to run Rod through a bunch of screens to get looks, but now we have more options and ability to score off the dribble.

Really, today could have been a 10+ point win if the Cats had finished more shots around the basket. We got inside of OSU's defense a lot, but missed a lot of good shots. Granted, OSU maintained their block% (15.4%, impressive without Cobbins), but it went from OSU blocking 20% of our 2s (!) in the first half to 10.5% in the 2nd which was a big reason (along with matching OSU's 2nd half FT rate) that the Cats won. Basically the Cats made 2 more 2PTers in the 2nd half to win it, everything else in the 2nd was the same (both teams made 2 3PTs and 15 FTs).

Nino "Crash" Williams was huge today.  We miss too many bunnies in general but he had three buckets (plus the foul) where he finished with getting the contact.

I admit I was worried and confidence took a hit when we fell down 53-47.... but we got the offense going just in time.  An 18-7 run over the next 7 minutes.

Defense played with grit the 2nd half.  Osu only 8-24 FGs and only 25% on OR.

Started off poor in the 2nd hf( 4-11 FT) but we made 11 of final 12 in the last 8 minutes

Box score will show .... we were + 2 in TOs, +4 in ORs, and +2 in 3pt makes.   3 things that have been HUGE in our win streak since first part of DEC

One stat I like to look at is this =

If you count 2 FTA as 1 FGA, then KState got 78 on true FG/FT attempts compared to 69.5 for OK St (Kstate 60 FGA and 36 FTA)

In our last 8 games, we are +12.9 on this FG/FT attempts category.

This stat obviously goes hand and hand with us being better than our opp on hitting the O-boards and turning the ball over less.  Once again, a big reason why we are on this streak.   FWIW... first 6 games we were -1.50

a) K-State sometimes takes awhile to release their official stats.
b) snow + driving + dropping off a person that went to the game with me

Sorry if I'm totally luking this talking point, but isn't it safe to say the turning point in the game was when smart high fived the backboard? Granted spradling only hit one of the fts but they showed a stat of how we out scored them from that point on with smart on the bench. Don't get me wrong, I was fist pumping and kick-punching like a wild man, but it troubles me that we might owe this victory to a completely avoidable stupid choice by a member of the opposing team. Thanks and I'll hang up and listen great win go cats.

When you win a close game it's often due to a completely avoidable stupid choice by a member of the opposing team.  I'm not sure why this would trouble you.

When Smart went to the bench with his 4th foul (the Tech), Ok St was up 48-44.   I think when he came back in OK St was  up 60-59 and Shane was at the foul line.  After Shane made his 2 FTs, Smart missed a shot 13 seconds later

So did it hurt OK St that he was on the bench for 8 minutes with the 4th foul?  Sure, but it's not like we were +10 or +12 in scoring while he was on the bench.

We stepped up and were effeicient on offense.   The final 12:15 of the game we scored 30 pts and had a 1.30 ppp.   8-16 on FGs and 13-16 on FTs

Posse beat me to the same thought.  I think OSU led by 4-5 when Smart picked up his technical.  They still led by 1-2 when he came back on the floor near 5-6 minute mark.  Nash picked up his fourth at 4:50 with OSU still up 1.  We didn't over take them with Smart on the bench, but they were never able to get a comfortable lead.  Both of those guys with 4 fouls on the floor, and neither seemed too interested in playing D from that point on.

the game was close when smart was in the game so this seems like a pretty stupid talking point to me

We were without Shane for far longer, it seemed.  crap happens in games.  Who cares?
