Jake has flaws, mainly those mid range passes and his ability to finish drives, but he got so much better at the end of the year. I'm excited to see what a full offseason will do for him.

We wont win the conference next yr.  One good game against a mid level big 10 team which pretty much means theyre horrible doesnt make him great.  He's average.  Did anyone watch him against KU?  Re:WVU, Sams was the one who threw pretty much a perfect TD pass to take the lead.  We will win 8-9 games with Jake and be okay.  Michigan is not a good team regardless of all time record.  This year shouldve been a development yr for Sams but now fans want to waste his talent at a position he hasnt played in 3 years.

Jake is going to mush gE next year.  The ratio of flip-flops to denial will be fascinating.

Would love him to prove me wrong, one good game against a below average big 10 team doesnt make me think he's going to, especially after how atrociously he played against one of the worst teams in the nation.

Michigan is not great, but it was the culmination of steady improvement, and it was an outstanding game, good is not accurate.

Ill agree, but Sams made just as much improvement.

I went back and looked at normal improvement for returning QBs in their SR year going back to Chad May. Here are the projected stats for Jake based on "normal QB improvement" under Snyder (this doesn't take into account splitting time with another QB, about 70-30 this year.)

Passing: 221-347 (64%) 3450 yards 9.9 YPA 28 TDs 11 INTs
Rushing: 124 att 350 yards 2.8 YPC 8 TDs

How many QB's had outstanding games against Michigan this year?

Several, but Waters' 191.66 QB rating was by far the best. Next was 157.3 for Indiana and 145.15 for Ohio St. The average QB rating against them was 123.85.

In other words, Jake was pretty damn good.

Pretty sure Jake's change from a freshman at IWCC to sophomore was night and day.

Maybe we'll see that here. This is the first time he has had a true QB coach. (IWCC and his highschool did not).

QB rating is the best way to compare QB performance.

When looking at passing numbers I think it has validity.

But here are your ESPN QBR numbers.

AVE for the season against Michigan: 50.3

Jake   94.8
OSU    92.7
Ind   91.5
NU   61.8
Minn   48.6
MSU   46.2
PSU   43.5
Akron   42.1
ND   40.1
Iowa   34.3
NW    32.2
CMU   18.3
Uconn   7.6

Why would I be miserable?  We won a bowl game and Waters played well.  If one game decides the starting QB, Sams shouldve been locked in after Baylor and OSU, especially since he ran the same plays over and over.

Also, I like ESPN's QBR, but there have been plenty of legitimate critiques of it like this one, this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one from a variety of advanced football stats nerds. I think it has value to look at, but I don't think its a revolutionary stat or on par (in value) with things like the 4 factors in basketball, etc. When you throw subjectivity into stats (and QBR does) then you are going to have some problems.

We didn't have any choice but to let Sams take over OSU/BU. He played very well, but made some critical mistakes. Once we got our deep threats back, Waters played the rest of the season. This was never a QB controversy. I'm as frustrated as anyone with the way our coaching staff misused Sams, and not in a "wrong position" kind of way.

I think the fact that he did it without top 2 targets makes the argument a lot more valid.

But he's clearly the best qb, right?
