Nearby tropical destinations
« on: March 30, 2010, 10:09:59 AM »
Faves? Looking for something that would be a good long weekend/4-day trip type of deal. Not super expensive, fairly close to N.A. so the travel time is reasonable (i.e. not Hawaii).

Been to Jamaica, so let's leave that out as well.

culebra (puerto rico) was pretty cool.  amazing beaches.  not a lot to do other than chill.   definition of getaway spot.

How much longer does it take to fly to Hawaii vs. Miami/drive to Key West?  Like 2 hours?  :dunno:

I'm assuming Hawaii is much more expensive, for one, and I've already gone there anyway.

Regarding Mexico (Puerto Vallarta), I'm not up on my current news: are there any issues (beyond the norm) with Mexico right now that should make tourists beware? Like coups and whatnot, I don't know.

Yeah, KC.

Puerto Vallarta, and if you're looking for a romantic adults only all-inclusive, I know just the place.

PVR is a great town, very safe, lots of ex-pats as well.

Mazatlan, MX.  I liked it better that PV, it takes less time to fly there and pretty much everything was cheaper there.

Food/drink in Mazatlan was priced more like what you would think stuff in Mexico would be.

It was far more expensive to eat/drink in PV than if I stayed in KC.

We are flying out early from Omaha and land in Key West at noon.

Was in similar situation a few years back, wanted a cheap, quick tropical getaway.  Went to Punta Cana, DR on charter out of St. Louis.

Was really cheap (under $500 per) but is Punta Cana is really only good for getting drunk at the beach/pool.  No nightlife, food is pretty crappy, etc.

Super easy trip, drive on I-70 to St. Louis was the worst part.

Also, while we are flying free, it would have cost us $250 per person to fly to Key West vs. about $850 per person to fly to Hawaii.  One is a week long minimum trip and one is a long weekend trip.  Can't really compare the destinations at all.

I wonder if CNS Casey at at the RICH Person restaurant in PV b/c nothing about Mexico should be more expensive.

I didn't eat at the MX McDonald's.  That is for sure.

My biggest complaint is the cost of drinks.  We stayed in a resort but went to several restaurants off the resort.  Beer and Margaritas were something like $4 and $5, and that was 7 yrs ago.

Two years before that was my first trip to Mazatlan.  Beer was like 50 cents and mixes were 4 for $2.

Sounds gross. Not elite at all.
