A friend of mine is trying to get me to do the Topeka Tinman triathlon with him.  I'm like lol nah.  I'm not a very strong swimmer.  I told him I might run or bike with him while he's training for it just so he has a "training partner".

Registered for Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon today. Eighteen weeks to build. Go!
My daughter's boyfriend has decided to run this with me. Little rough rider thinks he's going to beat me. He hasn't ran longer than six miles at a time. It's going to be fun watching him suffer. :)
Young pup can't handle the big miles.

Did he attempt the 17 with you?

I ran a marathon a little while ago. Didn't go as fast as I would have liked, but I knew I wouldn't meet my goal time if it was hot outside. It was low 70s and full sun on race day, which was no bueno. May post a full Peggy Po/Nancy Neg breakdown at some point if I have time.

Will probably focus on speeding up my 10k time and settle in for a lot of 10Ks and a few half marathons. Don't really have the time or husband/dad capital to run another marathon for a while (maybe ever).

I'd eventually like to tri (get it???) an Olympic-distance triathlon. Any Cat fans out there who have completed triathlons before?

Triathlons are hella fun - the problem for me was two-fold:

Not a great swimmer
Long bike rides and lower back no bueno  :dubious:

Also, hard to feel like you're really good at any of the three disciplines.

But they are hella fun  :driving:

He made a six mile loop and seven mile loop on two different days. Couldn't go further. He can run 5:xx min miles on shorter runs but doesn't have the endurance yet. I'll work him up to a half marathon this fall.

They announced at work who it was. Saw the dude very often down in our gym, guy ran a ton on the treadmill during bad weather times. Very sad, holy crap.

Yes, I just saw the story about him. He looked fit to me (had his shirt off when they were working on him). I had a friend die a few years ago in the Brew to Brew run, and he was healthy and in his early 30s.  Sometimes it is just your time.

That looks like fun, Copper.  EDIT: Wait, did you say 89 miles in?!  Tell us more.

I just ran my half this morning, so I'm ready to start switching to trails.  Finished in 1:31.  Was hoping to get under 1:30 but just didn't have it. Feeling good about progress the last few years.

@tdaver that is one impressive time.

And I'm doing the West Highland Way, in Scotland. 105 miles in 5 days. Pubs every 10ish miles. Outlandish views. Such as:

Commence FB vomit.

Scotland Day 1 Update
Facial hair status: peach fuzz
Most Scottish thing I ate/did: Toured Glengoyne Distillery. I mean, it was just half a mile off trail.

Or, ate a scone on top of a Scottish Hill (see photo)

Miles: 22 (was supposed to be 19, so some of Will's "bonus" miles?)

Damon, had those pints on your behalf.
MB, I mean I HAD to sample those wee drams during the tour, right?

Currently cozying up on the banks of Loch Lomond, enjoying some lasagna. Day 2 should be even a bit tougher, so the plan is for an early night.

Scotland Update, Day 2
Facial hair status: fine sandpaper
Most Scottish thing I did/ate: Maybe it was the macaroon bar in the mist along Loch Lomond, or challenging a feral goat to a dual.

23 miles of technical hiking, occasional trail running. The clouds lifted in the early afternoon to reveal some unbelievable views of the loch and the highlands looming above.

Scotland Day 3 update-ish
Facial hair status: coarse sandpaper
Most Scottish thing said/done. Easy, anointing myself with the waters of St. Fillan's holy pool. (Claims to cure insanity. We'll see. )

Not as much in the photo department because so much time was spent dodging muddy pools.

But landed in a gift from heaven, perhaps literally. Currently writing this from a cafe in an old church. Best wifi and americano found so far.

12 miles in, 11 to go. Legs feel the accumulated fatigue, but otherwise fine. Staying at an inn 3 miles from anywhere tonight.

Also, baby lambs (I know that's kind of redundant) are really, really cute.

Legs, feet, and toes in good shape. Heart in even better shape.

Scotland Update, Day 4

Let's break from tradition so I can just set everyone's mind at ease. Yes, I survived being charged by angry Scottish cows.

You see, cows act like prey until they think they, or especially their calves are actually to be prey. So when I clapped my hands to "scoot them along" it seemed to work, that is until a calf suddenly bolted. Then 2 mean momma cows and two mean steer with big horns stopped accepting my dominance and full on charged. As I turned to run (wondering if I could actually out run a cow) I tripped, and fell into the drainage ditch beside the path.

That's not water in that ditch. Yes I smelled like manure for the rest of the day.

4 angry eyes and two snouts were within inches. Thankfully they must have thought I smelled too bad to take any additional risk.

Anywhoo, that was yesterday. Today was glorious. Kind of lamenting that tomorrow is my last day.

And yes, I was audience to a free air show at the end of my day. Nice.

(Birthday)

What a way to celebrate. 16 more miles in the Scottish Highlands. Mother Nature cooperated by allowing his Majesty, Ben Nevis, to show his face. I'll post one final recap, maybe, but it's time to find some coffee. Cheers!

Nothing like 1.5 hour rain delay to start a marathon.

How did it go?
Poorly.

Tl;dnr: DNF.

Long story...

Fatigue and nutrition got me. Mostly fatigue.

I traveled all week with a different hotel each night. Crappy sleep most nights. Home on Thursday and slept ok. Thunderstorms on Saturday morning woke me at 330am. Couldn't get back to sleep.

Ate my breakfast with a 730a start time in mind. Three weather delays pushed it back to 910am. I didn't eat anything during the delays. Didn't even cross my mind.

Off we go finally. I'm just kicking along at any easy pace. 10:35 first mile. Notice heart rate already in zone 2. Hmmm. Shouldn't be there yet. Click along for another mile. 10:10. Zone 4 heart rate. Ugg.

Walk for thirty seconds. Pick back up and finish next mile in 10:20. Heart rate back to zone 4.

Now I'm getting annoyed. No way I've got the stamina for 26.2.

I argue with myself for another couple of miles and slow the pace. Of course this changes my stride and my shins start barking. Screw it. I bag the race at 5.5 miles and start thinking about what went wrong.

It was a good training build that started in December. Nutrition was okay most of the time. I try to live with a 90/10 rule.

The travel killed me though in April. I had to cut short a 20 miler after coming off a week of travel. The week before the race was probably the busiest of the month.

Lesson learned. No full marathon racing in April as long as I have this job. Old balls and don't have the stamina. :)

Already laid out the next training cycle. Half marathon trail race in October. Twenty-one weeks of slow build and step backs with a week break for vacation in July.

Glad the daughter's boyfriend didn't try to train. I would've probably destroyed myself beating him.
