My freshman son made drumline in the Marching Band yesterday afternoon.  Hard work and perserverance pays off.

Does your son play the snare drum or one of those big drums that put out the bass? I've always thought the snare looks way harder but the guys who play the big drums seem to get all the glory.

That guy at the left is the cool kid whose parents make him play in the band. You can tell he obviously wants nothing to do with those other losers.

The kid a the right is the meganerd who lives for band. The rest of the band shuns him because he is too dorky even for them and they try to stay as far away as possible. Just look at how the guy with the glasses is leaning so he doesn't have to smell him.

The guy in the room next to me a haymaker was in the drumline.  Went to band parties with him sometimes and they were really fun.

Fun Fact-

The All State Running back at Ben Ji's high school would join the band on the field for their halftime performance wearing his football pants/cleats. He stopped doing this his senior year.

I am amazed at the effort these students put into Marching Band.  Prior to my freshman son making drumline this year I had no appreciation for it.  I do now.

I texted him this morning asking how band was going.  He said "Fine.  No time to talk this is so fast-paced."

From Tuesday to this Saturday, the band will put in 13 hour days with 9.5 to 10 hours a day in actual rehearsal.  Various groups, including the KSU Alumni Assn, have provided refreshments and bbq.

This evening they have dinner with John Currie, Saturday evening a concert in front of Varneys in Aggieville and Sunday night after 3.5 hours of practice they have dinner at BSFS.  Do you think Coach Snyder might make an appearance???  I don't know.

Monday is off (first day of classes) and then rehearsals 2 hours per day beginning on Tuesday.

What a week for this kid.  In addition to his first college classes, he starts Army ROTC with PT beginning at 6 AM 3 days a week, band practices and winding up the week playing in front of a televised game, likely raucous, sold out crowd in newly renovated stadium.

My first week of college likely consisted largely of Schlitz at Brothers and Coors at Mr. K's. (If I could actually remember it.)
