I think he is the only decent candidate they have had since Mangino.  When he went helicopter parent on his players and took their cell phones and gave them curfews and crap I think he did himself in.

I have no interest in shitting on TG, but there is the obvious factor that, at that time, KU had just had its expectations elevated due to Mangino's little run. At that time, no one thought about how much worse it could possibly get ...

Kansas (Turner Gill, Buffalo head coach): A

The former Nebraska star returns to the Big 12, where he will now go head-to-head with the Huskers. What Gill pulled off at Buffalo -- taking over the worst program in Division I-A, bar none, and leading it to a MAC title three years later -- is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of the past decade. And his ties to the Heartland should help elevate Kansas' recruiting profile.

Turner Gill parlayed his stint at Buffalo—during which he turned the Bulls from the worst team in D-I to an average MAC team—into a decent BCS job at Kansas.

sd ended Turner's career at KU before it even began.  No way to come back from this burn:

And do we have a nickname for Gill yet?

Turder Gill imo

This is true, I distinctly remember KU fans at the time acting as if the losing streak at the end of Mangino's last season and the fact that there were like a billion seniors on that team, was no big deal. All that being said, you don't need hindsight to know that Zenger firing him after two years was absolutely the wrong thing to do. When I was looking for the quotes for my previous post the internet is just filled with articles deriding KU for doing it, or shitty clickbait list sites calling him one of the worst college football hires of the decade or even of all time. I do think he was a 6 win ceiling head coach there, but honestly that's not much different than Mark Mangino with Cale Pick instead of Todd Reesing and Aquib Talib.

TG was a home run hire at the time. The most up and coming #Mac coach at the time and a guarantee hire up for #kuftball. They stole him from Nebraska at the time. All monumental stuff, buds.

Turner Gill's KU teams were absolutely atrocious. Why are we trying to rewrite history here?

They beat a ranked GT team. No one is claiming TG's hawks were world beaters but I have not seen them beat a ranked team since.

Herman would be my wish but I know that's a pipe dream, a big name period at this point is probably a pipedream, KU needs to target a young assistant or defensive/offensive coordinator at Bama/Ohio State/Clemson etc that's looking to make a name for himself. If he wins at Kansas he will definitely do just that

Herman is a great target. Really depends how badly he wants to be a P5 HC again.

At this point we need to find someone who wants to use KU as a stepping stone to a better job. Keep the roster (mostly intact). Keep recruiting high school kids. Get to 4-6 wins a year then leave after an 8-9 win season when his stock is high for his dream job.

If a coach gets to 4-5 wins at KU, he'll get mentioned for other jobs

TG should have been given more time.  It was really amazing watching KU fans act like they were some kind of power football school because of one really good season when they got to avoid every good team from the South, and weren't good enough to beat MU and go to the CCG.  I do think TG would have ended up getting fired, but you don't fire a guy after 2 years and then go hire a guy who was clearly only hanging on for paychecks.

If I'm them, I'm going after Herman.   Herman owned K-State.   Herman was 4-0 in bowl games.  It's a situation where if the next coach has any kind of success they'll be an absolute rock star.

I agree on Herman.  Herman would be the Mustang's and Meadowlark's worst nightmare.

Herman would definitely be a great hire for the hawks but there is no way I see him taking that job.

Well, just to be safe, let's all agree to keep the Herman idea on this board and not repeat it else where.  As of now, the Tom Herman stuff is classified and I don't want to hear about it being talked about elsewhere.

OK, I am getting a lot of questions dm'd to me about the precise consequences for talking about Tom Herman outside of this board.  The short answer is that the consequences will be severe.

One more question that I have received several times, and I feel like I should just address it head on in this thread: "Would we be open to a sign-and-trade deal where [KU] signs Herman and trades [KSU] for [The Meadowlark] and some of [KSU's] excess cash?"  The answer is "Yes," obviously.

KU isn't getting herman.

i watched Long's presser yesterday and it is worthwhile for anyone who enjoys seeing people squirm in front of a microphone.

the thing that shocked me the most about it was that Long kind of poopoo'd the prospect of an internal/interim hire for 2021...Made it seem like KU would conduct a national search and hire a real live external person in the near future.  I think that's going to be really hard to do for a couple reasons:

1.  I think a sitting head coach is going to be a really tough pull.  The job sucks, the pay is going to suck because of cashflow problems, KU is probably going to make him keep almost all of the staff "to ensure roster stability" (but also because I don't think they can afford another ~1-3 million in assistant buyouts).  Speaking of buyouts, KU would have to cough up additional money for the sitting head coach's buyout.  The coach would have to leave his school/program/players in a lurch with the lousy timing of this (spring practice are in a couple weeks).  There's a lot of things working against a guy like Lance Leipold from taking this job.

2.  An assistant is more likely, but still kind of tough for a lot of the reasons listed above (job/pay/timing, etc.).  Kevin Kane has been tossed around quite a bit, and I think he's the most likely external hire from a logistical standpoint.  Smaller buyout, KU guy, not really qualified to be a HC anywhere else in FBS, so cash-in if you can.  Would probably be a little bit weird of a dynamic for a guy like Mike DeBord who has been around the block to be taking orders from 37 year old and woefully underqualified Kevin Kane, but beggars, choosers, and all that.

3.  Some unemployed retread...They've already hired Weis and Miles, but hell if they want to make a run at that again, go nuts.

If it were me, I'm giving "The Field" plus money vs. an internal hire of Jones/Eargle/Elliot/DeBord -- at least for '21.  The timing and financial problems are just enormous obstacles, and I think a lot of that goes away if they can just survive the '21 season.  Name a guy like Jones hc, give him a 3 year program-friendly contract, give him a small buyout if things go even further sideways, and they can do this again in two years where money is a little more predictable/under control.  Doing this would keep the roster in decent shape, allow him to recruit without lame duck appearances, and most importantly, KU can afford it.

but this is all why i was shocked to see Long give the impression that they're going to hire someone from the outside.  maybe he can swing it, but at this point, i have a hard time believing it.  and now, if they do end up making the most practical choice of an internal hire, they're going to be pissed because long sold them something else yesterday.
