The Phog is currently discussing why they need a 60k capacity stadium
I took a look and there’s a least one rational person explaining that seating capacity is an extremely dated concept.
If someone paid any attention at all they could see that numerous college football stadiums are overbuilt.
Yup.
I read something the other day about how stadiums need to focus on competing w/ the 10 foot rule moving forward. When someone stays at home now, they can watch their favorite team (and many other games) from their favorite chair, on a perfect TV picture, and have food, beer, and a bathroom all within 10 feet. Fewer and fewer people are wanting to go to stadiums short on amenities and high on capacity. You've got to do everything you can to counter that and get them to your stadium.
Stadiums need to decrease capacity with comfortable seating, and focus on having plenty of food and drink options as close as possible with lots of bathrooms nearby (little to no wait for these).
While a good football team definitely helps, it's no longer just about the football (except for some of the bluebloods and SEC schools).
Anything over probably 45k right now would be incredibly stupid for them.
The, watching on TV is just as good as watching in person is a myth. Watching on TV is more convenient but it certainly isn't better, especially for football, soccer, basketball, and hockey. Baseball is the only team sport that works just as well on TV, because the gameplay is isolated and a raucous atmosphere is rare.
IDK, for me going to a baseball game is still the rare better than watching on TV. You miss a lot of the nuances of the game (though I guess granted I know baseball better the others).
I in general disagree with football. I haven't been to a K-State game in person since 2018 and I went to every, and I meant every game in person since 2007 in college til I graduated in 2011, and then through 2018 save the rare "I have to be onsite at a power plant" game. Do I agree it's better to go to game? Sure, but "better" has become way more relative. Is it better to drive 2 hours to maybe tailgate and got to a game crammed with 50k others only to wait for hours to come back 5 hours later? Or is it a better experience to see my team play but actually get crap done before and after and not dick with the *everything that goes on to do that*. Watching a game is forever better in person, always will be, the myth is to pretend it doesn't takr a significant chunk of ones time to be there, when I can just view it and be more productive.
BTW, 10 year ago me would've have fought me on Mae's for even thinking how I do today.
IMO baseball is the only game that's actually better in person, since I think TV utterly fails to capture the nuances of the game, but then again I understand baseball better.
End of the day, I want to, and wish to experience and be that person that soldiers to every home game. But after being stuck in Canada for two years, and then the pandemic, I made me realize that going to a game in reality, is more a hassle and lead weight on your time than anything else.
