My health care is 100% free for me and my entire family, no premiums, pretty good plan in my estimation.  For vision/dental for me and my wife I think I pay $12/month.  Benefit of working for a Scandinavian country with socialist values.

Hopefully the United States will evolve to this point in a decade or so.  National healthcare, baby!

Norway pays for everything through oil production.

You guys ever see an insurance plan with no out-of-pocket limit for out of network?  I’ve never seen this before. Are there supplemental plans you can get for health insurance costs like an umbrella plan that only kicks in in case of a catastrophe?

This plan is a great plan as long as you don’t have an incident that requires surgery in rural Kansas and the only close hospital is out of network.

Yes. My wife works for a hospital and can't get a plan through work that covers ANY out of network costs. I think they have a deal where they'll let some emergencies slide but that's it. Health insurance is terrible.

Wow I just assumed that was the law or something. My plan has the same out of pocket max for in or out of network so if you hit it you can basically just get whatevs from wherever

I have to fly to my home office in Detroit to get my dental fix because we have no offices around me.

My insurance covers emergency as in network but once stabilized you have to go to an in network place.

So you can go to an er to “stop the bleeding” but then you have to go somewhere in network.

I’m in a high deductible hsa plan

I also mostly go to Walgreens for stuff because you pick the time and get in and out with a script.

Would have to wait at my dr forever

My daughter just had surgery and ended up staying the night in the hospital.  The hospital billed my insurance $36k.  The insurance company paid $11k, said I owed $3k and told the hospital to get bent on the other $22k.

Not exactly. This is the amount that was excluded from the contracted amount previously negotiated between the insurance company and the hospital.

My mom recently had quite the ordeal from a "routine" surgery that didn't go well.  Her tab from this is over $400k and still growing.  The $400k is the bullshit billed amount and of course the insurance company has only paid about $220k of that.  That's why healthcare costs are so mumped, the providers are throwing made up numbers out there just to see what they can get.  Thankfully her out of pocket maximum is $3k.

Yeah, I mean, I think everything is totally messed up all the way around, and I don't place blame anywhere, but you do see things like hospitals charging $15 for a single aspirin tablet.

Yeah, it costs more for the hospitals to buy their aspirin individually, but they have to because most of their patients only need one or two.

Both my daughters were born naturally.  not even an advil.  second daughter we were in the hospital for about 30 hours total, got there at 3 PM, baby born at 9, left the next day at 930.  The total bill to insurance was over $8000.

healthcare here is completely mumped beyond belief.

I mean, doctors make a lot of money for a reason. Not only because you want them to know wtf they are doing but because malpractice insurance costs much more than what most people make in a year. You’re paying for that, nurses, facilities, licensing, single use everything, etc. I’m not saying it’s not too expensive but I understand why it costs a lot.

Doesn’t really explain why some medical equipment costs 100x more if you get it through insurance vs. on Amazon but yeah many of those things are true.

They never charge pills on a single basis.  They charge by the package, so when you only took one you are paying for one hundred or whatever the size of the package is.  My wife works at an hospital pharmacy.  BTY, you can request the total of the medicine payed for, but hardly anyone asks for it.

When I was in hospital in '11 for surgery, they gave me check out notice at around 8:00 pm.  They didn't get approval of discharge paper work until 00:15 that morning.  When I received the billing they charged $1,200 for a full day from the 15 minutes they held me over.

My wife had an emergency c-section where the hit the oh crap button, an alarm went off in the hallway and people started sprinting to the OR. This was an in-network hospital. When that button was pressed an extra pediatric surgeon was paged and ran in.  He was out-of-network.  We got multiple denials to have that charge re-coded as in network.  Each denial had a statement that next time we should ask each doctor present if they are in-network to avoid this issue in the future. After the final denial they told me if I wanted to appeal further it would have to be with legal action.
