it's hard to travel when you have lots of animals.

he has cowboys and even sdyoungerbro there. he doesn't need to be there for anything other than thinking he needs to be there.

My dad was visiting SF last month and saw a guy wearing a royals hat and got all excited and was like, "hey, go royals!" and the guy wearing the hat was like "it's just a hat, man."

what is this, the 19th century?  why in the world does he have cowboys?

to feed cows, doctor cows, brand cows, drive through them in four wheelers or on a horse or on foot and look for sick ones to doctor, drive semi trucks full of cows or cow food, make sure cow water isn't frozen and break the ice if it is, find the baby cows and put an ear tag in their ear with the same number as the mom cow, look for random dead cows and try to figure out why they died, move cows from one area to another one for some reason, all kinds of stuff. there's a lot more to being a cow farmer than just having a shitload of land and cows. you also have to have cowboys. so three total things. have land, have cows, have cowboys.

on top of cowboys he also employs a couple local HS kids at any one time and makes them do odd jobs he could do himself when cows don't need that stuff above or farm stuff doesn't need to be done. also the cowboys do farm stuff when it's not winter. like drive tractors, get sprinklers unstuck, plant seeds, harvest seeds, plant hay, bale hay, swath hay, put chemicals on weeds, drive semi trucks around with wheat and corn and alfalfa and beans and probably some other stuff, probably more things.

Does he call them cowboys? We call them ranch hands. I'm fascinated by this potential isogloss.

Lately, my dad has been giving me advice like, "Nah, you don't need to worry about paying taxes for that. The government will never know."

"Hired man"
This is my in laws terminology. Apparently there are a lot of South Africans who come to the US and work on farms. My in laws make fun of them for wearing shorts, but they had one guy who worked for them that they tried to get citizenship for and they finally did, then he quit to go to work for somebody else :frown:

WonderDad has started traveling around the world the last decade or so, and man has it affected his fashion choices. While his wardrobe used to be almost exclusively made up of college-themed/non-hooded sweatshirts, it has slowly been taken over by t-shirts celebrating one country or another.(Also giant orthopedic [?] shoes.)

You want to see an overweight American in a too-snug t-shirt with a tuk tuk on it? Just find WonderDad.
