Where was that, mocat?

the Karwendel range of the Alps, very near the germany /austria border

That's pretty obviously Lake Wabaunsee, the Gem of the Flint HillsTM

Wabaunsee is an anglicization of a native american word, but ironically "-see" is german for "lake". the one in the photo is Lautersee

mrs mocat and I went to Munich for a close expat friend's wedding, and she planned some time for everyone to go down to Mittenwald for hiking/biking in the week leading up to the wedding. the groom's German father is super into alpine biking and once a year transverses the alps into Italy with some buds. he recommended this route from Scharnitz, Austria up to little hotel/cafe on the side of a mountain called Karwendelhaus. it was a 12 mile / 3000 ft climb, with beers, austrian goulash, and kaiserschmarrn waiting for us at the top. fun and fast descent back down the way we came. i had never climbed anything that steep with that much elev gain. not strictly VQ i guess but pretty amaze.

the Austrians have invented a beer shade (!)

There's something about the juxtaposition of cool, clear water and soaring mountains that speaks to me. Lots of high-elevation lakes in Colorado fit that description. The only better ones I've seen are in Switzerland.

Anyone have any favorite hiking boots?

I bought a pair of these about 5 years ago and after 4 vision quests and 4 years of chasing pheasants one of the heels started to come off while I was standing in a river in Wyoming this summer.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KWK82NK/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I went and ordered the same pair again and for some reason the day I ordered them they were only $33 instead of $90 like they usually are.

I bought them and when they arrived I thought they were a different variety at first until I compared them to my original pair and realized the originals were just beat to crap.

There are few things more tranquil than a natural mountain lake.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Man get some water shoes for wading those streams.  Extends the life of your boots and much easier on your feet.

I just use my trail runners.  Haven’t had boots in years.  But I generally stay on trail, not chasing animals  through the brush.

I generally use trail runners for hiking.
I have a pair of Danner's that my MIL got me for Christmas about 8 years ago that are incredibly comfortable.

I got a pair of insulated Danners last year for hunting in the snow/cold and they are almost too warm. Incredibly comfortable as well.

I got a set of Timberline boots that look a lot like your's.  Got them in Wamego several yrs ago on my way to a Cats game.  They are the most comfortable boots I ever owned.  They are very strong, but I do put boot grease on them which makes them waterproof and very soft.
Hot time in Kat town tonight.

i wasn't sure if this should go in the cyclist thread or the VQ thread, but i decided it goes here. my best friend and i did a 3-day bikepack on Vancouver Island, and when you take a ferry into another country with only your bikes and the stuff packed on them, it feels very VQ-y. however this is not the most remote part of the world, and we passed a town at least once every day, which was nice because this was our first bikepack and we don't know what we're doing. ended up being 170 miles, 8000+ft gain, from Victoria to Cowichan Lake and back. gorgeous part of the world if you like forests. at one point there were two mountain lions (cougars in canuck speech) sitting in the middle of the trail about 200 yards in front of us, just staring at us. pretty scary and eventually they just wandered off, so we decided to camp elsewhere that night!

the night before, we car camped in Olympic NP near Port Angeles, WA. woke up to a beautiful sunrise with Mt Baker off in the distance

the Kona Unit X

Kinsol Trestle

on the first day, we made it 60 miles all the way to the town by the lake (farther than we planned, due to the cougars), and we sort of stumbled into a patch of trees in the dark to set up the hammocks.

in the morning we found out we were actually like, right next to the lake ?!

managed to eat at legendary tim H's twice. amaze

the north end of Lake Cowichan

back in Victoria
