Anybody have any experience with manual reel mowers? It seems like they have a lot of advantages over mowers with engines, but my knee jerk reaction is they are something poors would use. If you need additional information, I have a medium sized lawn and my lawnscaping goal is to not have the worst lawn on my street.

I was walking my pup earlier this week and saw a lady struggling to mow her lawn with one. The part she had mowed still looked like crap, seems like a terrible way to try and impress people with how green you are.

Don't get one if you have lots of sticks and branches in your yard. Otherwise, they are supposed to work well. I've honestly never used one, though, and don't know anybody who has.

Both of my brothers have small yards and are super tree loving hippie FM types(still not sure exactly what this means) that love them some non-exhaust emitting things. Both have gone out and bought really high end reel mowers. Both hate the eff out of them. They have to go over everything like 3 times and the grass still is uneven and shitty looking. Then, after you get all worked up and frustrated while mutilating your lawn, you have to spend time cleaning them, oiling them, and sharpening them.

Fun!

Both are now back to killing baby polar bears with self-propelled push mowers now.

Seriously though, my toro self-propelled is the best non-riding mower I have used. I hate pull starts and push mowers, but that one is super easy and has started with in two pulls(as guaranteed!) literally every time I have used it for the last 7 yrs. Also, it has lasted 7 yrs with very little maintenance and no issues.

Get those zoysia plugs they advertise in the back of golf digest magazines that doesn't need any water and only needs mowed once every few months.

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't mind extra work because I spend a bunch of time excersizing anyway, so it just seems like a manual mower would be a good way get excercize instead of riding my bike. The fact that they do a shitty job makes this a non starter though.

I bought my house from a guy that was moving across the country. He left a lot of stuff, including a reel mower. It works well if you don't have thick grass or weeds. You also have to keep it really short, as it won't cut longer grass well. In short, just get a legit mower.

Just ride your bike and get a real mower. (Not a reel mower.)

they work pretty well if you take the time to maintain it although I wouldn't recommendo it for any yard bigger than small.

Relatively cheap and have never had any issues. Most powerful push mower I have ever used in terms of handling heavy grass and mowing down big piles of leaves before bagging.
