Yeah, it is horrible and all...
But you know at least one Texan said last night:
"Hey Y'all, let go and check out the fire at the fertilizer plant"   :flush:

Well I'm the guy in my driveway with a domestic beer when the tornado sirens are going off.  So one time gella's post makes sense to me.

Ammonium nitrate is used in fertilizer because it is a very good oxidant. Plants need oxygen to grow... Just like fires need oxygen to grow. They say ammonium nitrate in like, ever movie where someone makes a makeshift bomb.

Yeah, the vicinity of the plant to the residential areas was the first thing I thought of but look at that blast radius. I think a lot of the fatalities were from people who went to watch the fire and didn't realize it was about to go boom boom.

ammonium nitrate is used as a fertilizer because it is a concentrated source of soluble nitrogen.  plants get oxygen through respiration, as o2 and co2.

Nope. The retirement home etc that collapsed shouldn't have been so close.

Think of those volunteer firefighters too fighting that blaze for an hour before it went up.

I visit the Koch Fertilizer plant I'm interning at this summer tomorrow...

May want to downgrade to radio waves.

Big timers like Koch Fert don't blow up their plants.  This was some small time opperation probably cutting every step in the book to keep out of the red.

OKC was a truck full of fertilizer. This was an entire plant filled of fertilizer.
