It really is an interesting sociological event. Like, do people not want to laugh/see happy things? Are people offended by people wanting to move on  and not dwell on these events?

expanding on this, the use of social media with major entities and corporations is kind of fascinating. Like, why is Wu-Tang Clan expected to tweet "Prayers for Boston" or nothing at all? Not saying it's wrong, it's just interesting times.

I don't think they are. But I think they can if they want.

Now there's a third element - not ending your pre-scheduled tweets. lol at Dickie V

This is rough ridin' stupid. Oh spare me the outrage if Kim Kardashian tweets about something other than a horrible rough ridin' situation.  I don't give a crap if companies allow their scheduled tweets to go out. It becomes a dick measuring contest of who can be more compassionate and it's stupid.

For the most part I can shrug stuff off, but sometimes I read a horrible story in the newspaper and I feel sad for a bit.

The Boston one is a mixed bag of anger, sadness, intrigue etc.

It's always just a brief moment of emotion and then I move on.

9/11 though was basically about a week of feelings then I got back to focusing on school.

They can, obviously. But it's strange. Here's another example:

https://twitter.com/apeconcerts/status/323927963273940992

Is this expected? Like is it permission to go about your normal business? I guess it's possible they genuinely care.

The prescheduled tweets are also interesting.

I have no problem with people ignoring it completely or continuing to post stupid crap like they do every other day. I also don't have a problem with people getting super into it and doing the hashtags if that's how they like to react.

We're going to cancel responses to other tragedies because of this new tragedy.

I'm about the same.

Sucks that it happened, glad it wasn't worse, kill whoever did it, move on.

I don't ever get that sick to the stomach reaction people have?  :dunno:

A lot of people saw a lot of photos of severed limbs and pools of blood. So yeah, I'll allow them to be sick to their stomachs.

people on facebook are going on and on about what a tragedy it is, and how they are sick to their stomach.  i know that facebook posts are normally an over-the-top gut reaction, but i see things like that after any horrific event.

i don't ever get "sick to my stomach" about stuff.  i see what happened, say "bummer," and move on with my day.  is is not normal?  i crack jokes about deaths on here, but IRL i don't make jokes, i just don't really care about those things.

I would characterize you more as a subhuman, so you really aren't a person and therefore can't be a horrible one.

I don't really get emotional about this stuff. I cried after Sandy Hook because, good grief, it's a bunch of young kids. But Katrina, 9/11 and today were more of a "man, that's crazy" reaction than anything. I think the reason it's been on my mind more than usual is that it's sad how this stuff seems to keep happening more and more on a regular basis.

Yep.  If this happens in Baghdad, it's just another Monday afternoon.

No, human beings should not be okay with doing these types of things, no matter what country they're in.

If only the world were made up of 7 billion Jakesie's we'd be safe.  Unfortunately it's not and there are lots of crazies out there.  Just feel fortunate you live in a country that has much fewer attacks than others.

Seeing stuff like this doesn't bother me, not sure if it ever did. People die all the time. You know what I don't like seeing that actually makes me sick to the stomach?  Animal abuse and really graphic actual fights. Bum Fights made me nauseous as hell.

I'm not even sure Newtown really bothered me all that much. crap was way mumped up but I guess I'm jaded to the point that I honestly thought that I was surprised the body count wasn't higher. Desensitized is probably a good term for me.

Body count was much lower than what a non-crazy person could accomplish if that was his twisted goal.

Kinda what I was getting at.  Makes me wonder about the intentions of the shooter and all that. Still curious about the initial reports of handguns found inside the school and a AR found outside, on a trunk. :dunno:

I just refuse to be significantly more affected by American deaths than citizen's of other countries deaths. Our military services killed 30 innocent people today ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-125820/US-bomb-kills-30-Afghan-wedding.html ), and no one will talk about it in lieu of talking about 2 people that died in Boston today (although they wouldn't have talked about it anyway).

A much better example is the coverage of the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 vs the coverage of Hurricane Katrina. If you want to argue that it's more important that we hear about Katrina because it's closer and we can offer help easier, absolutely, I agree. But less than 2,000 people died due to Hurricane Katrina, and TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY THOUSAND people died because of the tsunami. That's nearly a quarter of a million lives that were lost. But the amount of time that we heard about it was miniscule compared to how much we heard about Katrina.

I just wish we would be at least marginally concerned with tragedies in other countries, considering how much more prevalent they are.
