Is gold only used in decorative settings? I feel like it has other, more practical uses.

it has lots of uses, but cheaper substitutes are used.

i guess small quantities are used industrially, but that market is miniscule compared to as decoration and as an investment.

Gold can be used in electronics, but sys is right the amounts are so small.  I saw a process where these people were using teeny tiny gold wire to wire a MEMS sensor.  There was scrap gold wire and they just threw it away.  It was like a little ball of golden cotton candy.

Guess who is driving down the price of gold? The FED! Did naked shorts of $24 billion in the last few days. The fed did it to keep the dollar up and the QE to keep working.

i'm interested to hear what you believe is a reasonable price.

you're right to call me out for my statement.  there's no really good way to value gold, since it's basically a useless, decorative material.

for me, as a (potential) purchaser of collectible gold, i'd be reluctantly willing to pay about $1000/ounce.

for something more objective - total cost of production is in the realm of $1100/ounce (but this is very plastic, since it will expand and contract with the actual cost of gold).  still, somewhere around there is likely a near term floor.

oth, when interest rates rise, gold should fall.  discount as you like.

This is true right now with a lot of marginal mines operating. That number will fall back to a more reasonable $650-$750/ounce if gold drops much further. The most efficient mines today are producing at about $630/ounce.
