This is more about my friend, but he isn't big on the idea of societal safety nets for the non-disabled, but understands their necessity at least on a limited time frame basis, thinks public transit is great but thinks that KSU students that complain about parking a couple blocks off campus and walking are dumb, and thinks affirmative action was probably more necessary at one point than it is now and believes applications should be judged on their individual merit regardless of race. He went to public school and thought that went pretty well, and does think the environment needs to be protected because, you know, we only have one planet and stuff.

It was so fun to move to a different part of the country and get to meet political types that I had formerly just seen caricatured in TV and movies and stuff. Socially conservative Jewish lawyer who always "barely" votes Democrat and still hates the crap out of the Catholic Church was maybe my fave.

are you using american definitions of conservative and liberal?  because i'm pretty sure the the talking point of one of the two dominant parties (maybe of both) in the last year was about how one party wanted to government spend like 24% of gdp and the other thought the right % was 19% or 21%.  whatever the actual numbers were, they clearly show how small the ideological gulf between the parties actually is (and how petty their little spats).
