He's really pretty sensible about many things.   Sure he has some pretty extreme personal views but he realizes that.

I think the biggest difference between the two and probably what makes Bill Maher scarier to the right is that he actually believes the things he says. When he's not making an obvious joke. I don't think Coulter believes most of what she says, she just says what will get the biggest reaction. Nobody really takes Coulter seriously, while a lot of people on the left take Maher seriously.

Sure he's all PETA, but I don't think he's fiery and brimstone about eating meat.

He's all for capitalism with protections, and his healthcare views are not out of the ordinary.
