Grand Canyon.

this is a dumb one. It's one of the coolest natural settings in the world.

Mt. Rushmore isn't bad, though. But it's still pretty cool.
Rushmore is stupid, drive way across South Dakota to a hill with faces carved in it.  take a pic.  drive home.  nothing cool about it, I've been.

It is a pretty impressive human achievement to be able to carve out something like that out of a mountain. So one could gain some sort of inspiration from that.

But yeah in most cases you're right.

oh man, just remembered another one...

after i ran my first marathon, i can't tell you how many times i worked forced that into conversation. like, it was a heck of an accomplishment for me at the time (virtually no training, drank soda daily, had a foot injury, etc.), and yet, i couldn't just enjoy it and keep it to myself. instead, many conversations went like this:

Friend: "It's so cold outside."
Me: "Yeah, it was actually colder yesterday when I ran my first marathon."
Friend: "Wait, you ran a marathon?"
Me: "YES! I DID!"

to this day, i still don't know WHY i chose to run that first marathon.

i hope it wasn't just so "i could say i did it."

Running a marathon is a really incredible achievement j rake.  You cheated death and pushed your mind and body to the outer limits.

i went to a conference on snakes held in an old monastery a little ways out of town.  wandered around the countryside a bit.  ate, drank.  went to the coast and to lucca.

On the flip side, there are people who live in touristy areas and don't appreciate it all. Like, tons of people commute across the Golden Gate Bridge. I took a commuter bus across it one day after work and like no one looked up from their phone when they cross. I was like, "Holy crap! the golden gate bridge! this is beautiful, you guys!" but only in my mind because it was a pretty quiet bus.

sounds great.  If I visit again I'll still know to avoid everything in the actual town.

but good god, conference in old monastery, countryside wandering, coasts... rick sys' europe sounds pretty good

Grand Canyon is not a bad example, michigancat. I rarely want to see natural occurring phenomenons. I'd rather go to a fun city coughcougChicagocoughcough and try out a bunch of great restaurants and see what the night life is like (and apparently Trim is the only other person this board who enjoys that as well).

all that i did was eat when we were in chicago, loved it.  spent an incredible amount of money on food during a 36 hour stretch, but loved it.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

I like to see tourist stuff too. Like, places people say are too touristy. I enjoy most of them.

I think the only thing I hate about places considered "too touristy" are all the tourists.

Stonehenge.  Just awful.
My prescience is fully engorged.  It throbs with righteous accuracy.  I am sated.

I've never been to California except that one time when I was a kid and we drove to the border just to take a photo with the "Welcome to California" sign.

Stonehenge.  Just awful.

I would go to that.

Once my parents took us to Carhenge on way back from Yellowstone.
