We need a new laptop, not a desktop, I want to be able to move about my house computing.  Not interested in apple products; we BBS, interweb, and edit photos.

I think this should be accomplished for less than $700, give me some options and/or computers to steer clear of.  If it matters we just bought a 2TB external hard drive.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

In fairly desperate need of a laptop fellas...

People who buy a quality product (apple) as opposed to a piece of crap (everything else).

bought my mid-08 iMac for $899 on sale when the 09 iMac came out.  all I've done to it is open it up and install an SSD into it about six months ago.  still works great, no desire/need to replace it anytime soon.

The computer my dad bought in 1995 still works fine, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't upgrade.

what does this do

its silent and uses less power and generates less heat and is way faster and costs more money

I could tell my hard drive was about to die (made a lot of clicking noises, randomly crashed, etc.) so I bought an SSD to replace it.  the SSD is basically just a lot faster since it has no moving parts, all flash memory.  so my iMac now starts up in like 8 seconds and applications open super fast.  video rendering was also a shitload faster when I made the #SWP video.

I do make sure to keep a backup on a time machine running a normal hard drive because the SSDs are prone to weird crashes and stuff so it's a good idea to make sure you have a regular backup handy.  the normal hard drives are still more reliable than SSDs.

fair warning, opening up the iMac and getting access to the hard drive is kind of a pain in the ass.  not too bad though, anyone of above average intelligence can do it.

It won't fix this. The heat from a laptop HD is negligible. The heat you are feeling is from the cpu/gpu.

That's what you get for not building your own. Limited upgrade opportunity. Or in the case of an iMac, no upgrade opportunity.

hemmy i see what you're saying i mean unlike when you buy a ford F-150 i guess when you buy a BMW you can't just jack it up and bore out the cylinders and put a 9" ford rear end on that sumbitch and slap some badass headers and a couple of flowmasters to really make that sumbitch growl and then top it off with a calvin pissing on a Chevy logo window sticker or whatever it takes to make it better. i just like the car as-is. different strokes for different folks though.
