When we add 2 more schools I could care less about their basketball prowess
That's what I'm concerned about. The Big 12 needs a program like Louisville or Memphis to challenge KU. Football is a dying sport and has already maxed out its profitability. Basketball is a much more popular sport internationally and is just going to get bigger.
I think you’re actually partially correct, imo. Football will begin to reach a ceiling shortly, with “gains” being modest in the future (relatively speaking). Basketball however, from a regular season standpoint, still isn’t maximizing its potential. With some vision by a conference, it could.
Can the Big 12 improve in basketball, sure. But the $$'s will likely never touch football. The monetary differences between the top revenue producing football schools and the top revenue basketball schools (by sport) are staggering. For example, yesterday, I looked at some revenue numbers in the DOE EIA database, and Florida Football (for example) by itself surpassed the total revenue of K-State (and ku) athletics in FY 2012.
Football stadiums obviously have more seats, and vastly higher revenue potential with extra contributions required for seats, suites, stadium clubs etc. etc. The huge television contracts are heavily weighted towards revenue generation from Football. The college football playoffs will be huge with the payouts coming much quicker than the NCAA tourney pay out formula and distribution.
