oscar: "Once I saw it was bogged up..."
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:27:57 PM »
Q: oscar, could you talk about that last sequence.  Looked like you were trying to call a timeout.

COACH WEBER:  I did.  All year we've just went and tried to make a play down the stretch.  Angel was out the time before, I called timeout with seven seconds left to maybe get Angel back in, give us a shot. We beat Oklahoma.  Angel made a play down the stretch.  We had other games where we made plays.  Once I saw it was bogged up, I tried to call timeout.  I know it's tough on the officials because they're focusing on the game.  I was sitting right with them.  I looked at the clock at 2.2.  I yelled it as loud as I could, but we didn't get the call.
Sometimes things aren't meant to be.

* * *

oscar observed that things were "bogged up" at the 2.2-second mark but didn't complete his request for a timeout until the 1.6-second mark. Even so, it was pretty clearly bogged up at the 4.3 second mark when Angel's first attempt to penetrate was cut off and he was forced to dribble left. Among the reasons things were bogged up ...

-Irving didn't want the ball and stayed outside the 3-point line the entire play (never made an attempt to cut or to crash the boards on a miss).
-McGruder was guarded well and was moving away from the basket along the sideline.
-Southwell was standing six feet outside the 3-point line.
-Gipson was 18 feet from the basket trying to set a screen (not a threat out there, so even if Angel got free and was able to drive to the basket, La Salle had a help defender standing in the paint).

Most coaches are guilty of overcoaching, and I had no issue with oscar letting them play out the possession. But ONLY for a few seconds, and certainly not FIVE seconds.

At the 4.3 mark, ALL FIVE K-State players were standing outside the perimeter and no player, ball-handler included, was in a reasonable position to score.

Bad job by oscar.

Also, he didn't even yell that loud.

Frank did this with Jacob Pullen and he won games this way. The Iowa State game at Hilton as an example. We just don't have that kind of a player this year. Should of called a timeout.
Luke's stock is rising as Winters continues to validate his greatness. Add Luke and Winters to my list! Also, EMAWBLAST! and Tobias!

You either call the timeout as soon as you cross half court or you don't call it at all. Trying to call a timeout with less than 2 seconds left is just moronic.

That is such a fan comment. You are the Coach, you are supposed to make it meant to be

Yeah we're going to get some mileage out of that quote.

This, I fear, is a fact. Unless oscar has a winless season, and that won't happen.

If and when we finally do fire him, I'm going to tweet "It just wasn't meant to be" to @coachbruceweber every 5 minutes until I get bored.

the positioning on the play at 4.3 seconds is fine.

I'd prefer to have at least one player moving toward the basket.
