So glad to hear he is safe. Can't imagine the horror. He and his daughter along with Kevin and his wife met us in MHK for the Texas game. Great guy.

I heard that to shut of the main they had to bust a hole in the pavement and actually pinch the pipe rather than being able to use a shut off valve.

1. They are f'ed

2. the permit just says city hall approves it, it has nothing to do with One Call or MGE locating the utility.

The permit wouldn't have prevented this.

Yeah, even if they did locate correctly, there will be some ball pain coming their way for not being able to shut it off in a timely manner or by reasonable method. Makes me think their infrastructure was neglected and not up to current code. I mean, they had to bust a hole and pinch the actual pipe, rather than going a block or two down and accessing a shut off valve via access point. I am not fully up to date on this stuff, but pretty sure shut offs are required pretty frequently and pinching a pipe is never the answer. Imagine what could have happened if the pinching of the pipe was botched? JJ's already on fire, new gas leak intentionally caused a block away and new fire caused...

I spent some time with Jimmy, the owner over the weekend and he said he wanted to rebuild. Who knows though, we were both pretty PAK'd and I'm sure sorting through insurance, etc will be a long drawn out process.
