Oh man if the construction company that nobody wanted down there ended up causing the explosion, the lawsuits will be Crown Center walkway-esque 

Crown Center was a design flaw on the engineers end. The plans they drew up showed the walkway couldn't withstand the weight and they ignored it or didn't see it, that's why they got sued. Someone gave their word as a professional that the design was good to go and it wasn't.

Unless there was a flaw with the gas company's installation of the gas line and a car crash caused the leak, I don't think it even matters if they called or not, they won't be held liable. If it was leaking before hand that's another story. As far as I know, utility companies are not responsible for anything besides "wear and tear" especially if damage happens that quickly.

Yeah, it reminds you of Crown Center because they are both tragedies in Kansas City. One was a series of dumbasses being lazy, this sounds like a straight up accident.

Yeah not to derail this thread, but yeah, it was a shitty design to begin with. The two channels facing each other instead of back to back was Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) (still would have worked), and the design required a nut to be threaded like 20 feet, so the fabricator changed the design in the shop drawing stage. Engineer didn't catch it during shop drawing review. The change resulted in twice the load going to the shittily designed connection. Combo of the two resulted in the disaster.

With a blast like that, I could see someone getting knocked out by the explosion and not being conscious during the fire.

The explosion was so powerful. The fire was so hot. The smoke so thick. Whoever this was felt no pain and unfortunately is probably largely disfigured.

"[Second cousin] miraculously survived the explosion & was released to go home from the hospital with lacerations & cuts from glass & debris.   The employees had just told the public to vacate due to the odor of gas & within seconds, the explosion occurred.  She was behind the bar with her back to the 14' tall glass wall filled with liquor bottles which blew up & fell.  She was blown out of her shoes . . . She had to crawl out from the debris & smoke to get out.  She was able to walk & a kind soul took her & another person to St. Luke's (they didn't wait for an ambulance).  They had to cut her undergarments off of her because they were so impacted with glass & had to remove glass from her hair & head.  I believe she had some stitches done in her ankle area."

That was on Phog. Pretty crazy that someone could survive that and be out of the hospital already.

Hate to be insensitive but if only 2 people died that would be pretty incredible, considering the severity of the blast/fire. You could quote me a much higher casualty count and I would believe it without question.

I thought the count was going to be huge.  They way they originally presented it made it sound like all was normal until a car crashed into the building then suddenly blew up.  I figured all this at 6pm on the plaza would equate to an entire dinner crowd being T'ed and P'ed nationwide today.
