When I butter toast I just rub the whole stick on the hot piece of toast. (Like using a glue stick)

also, straight out of the fridge?  and how do you manage the butter stick wrapping so as to expose part of it for rubbing, but leave a wrapped part for grabbing?  and, are you rubbing with the small end or an entire long side?  and also, is your butter one of those extra skinny and long packed so you have 4 sitting 2 atop the other 2, or the shorter, fatter ones that come in packages with 2 placed lengthwise and then 2 more sitting end to end to them?

I mean it would maybe make sense if you ate toast a lot and kept a stick around just for rubbing over toast. peal of the wrapper as you go and hold the wrapper side.

I agree but I also don't think you're going to want to get out a pair of scissors all the time either. just tear it at an angle and leave a little bit each time to start the new tear.
