Sure, but not too be a party pooper but we're barely above .500 in conference and it's literally the worst it's ever been.

has a team ranked at the end of the season ever not received an at large bid? Like, if we can hold serve and stay ranked (big if, i realize) then like...?

It's college baseball, so that almost certainly happened before the field expanded to 64 in the late 90s and it probably has happened since because there are several polls/rankings and then the NCAA uses RPI.

We play SEMO this weekend (ranked in the 140s in RPI) and Wichita State (No. 86) tomorrow followed by Okie State (No. 20) and TCU (No. 56). I think to have a chance, we have to win the TCU and SEMO series (ideally sweep SEMO) and then win a couple in the Big 12 tourney. If we can pull off the Okie State series win on the road, that would be huge.

Yes, but if/win we don't make it, Hughes can squarely place the blame on himself for creating a truly awful non-conference schedule and then going on to lose six games against teams outside the top 100 RPI, which includes two losses to teams 250+ in St. Thomas (No. 285) and Omaha (No. 254). For reference, there are 305 D1 baseball teams, so that St. Thomas loss is really, really bad.

Setting aside that we increased the odds of us hosting to a whopping 1%, the big news out of this weekend is that we just might have found a No. 3 starter. Yeah, we're 90% done with the regular season, but, hey - better late than never.

What did Hughes do to stop being a huge loser?  Any super stat heavy insight?

He's still a loser who's made the NCAA tourney 3 times in a 25 year coaching career. But, I don't think too many people thought this team would be in NCAA contention, so he deserves credit for that.

As for this year, the high-level differences (in my opinion) are:

-Less bad pitching (we're No. 2 in Big 12 play in ERA despite only having about 5 guys you always feel pretty good about - the rest, not so much; maybe the assistant high school pitching coach we hired in the offseason knows a thing or two)

-Plate discipline (we still strike out a ton - everybody does - but we're 4th in the country in walks, which is important because we're last in the Big 12 in BA)

-Home vs. away (Greg has mentioned our home/away splits have been atrocious in recent years; they're still probably pretty bad, but we're 13-9 away from home this year - last year we were 6-17, 2021 was 3-12, 2019 was 8-17 - if you can just go .500 on the road and then win consistently at home, you'll be in the NCAA conversation every year)

-Big 12 sucks (if this isn't the worst year ever for the league, it's got to be pretty close; by RPI, the Big 12 is third, but by non-conference win %, it's 4th - but the league is far, far, far below both the SEC and the ACC - more than usual)

Stir that all up and here we are...

MUCH MUCH BETTER. 41 Stolen bases through-out the entire season last year through out all 58 games. So far this season we have 101 total bases stolen. So stolen bases are up 140.4%
Coach Wates is held responsible for this turn around as he was put in charge of baserunning philosophy last year and implemented a completely new scenario chart with 10 games left of last season.

Series against OSU begins tonight. If we took the series, I'd say we'd be close to a lock for NCAAs (assuming we didn't get swept next week vs. TCU).

But, we haven't taken a series (home or away) from OSU since 2010, so there's that.

Hughes is enough of a winner to interrupt Kellis from his 3-month summer nap to write an article

They've pretty much kicked our asses over that stretch.

I stopped looking going back 4 seasons (skipped main Covid season).  They swept all 4 seasons.

Okie State starting pitchers have been ass in Big 12 play -  if we can just get one decent start in the next two games...
