Cats drop game to previously 1 win Omaha.
Lots of stuff to get to on this. Senior starter Colton Kalmus continues to struggle, he has very little command of his off speed stuff and can basically only throw a fastball with any consistency. Not only that but he also committed 3 errors tonight, thats actually pretty tough to do as a pitcher who lasted only 3 innings.
Kalmus took the loss tonight. Im hoping when Bryce Ward and Hudson Treu return from injury we will see less of Kalmus. I hate to beat up on the kid but he is a fifth year player, through 11 2/3 innings this season he has given up 12 hits and 13 walks with a 8.49 ERA. The bullpen did pitch well and shut down Omaha for the most part but the damage had already been done.
Kalmus is not alone in blame for this one either, the Kstate offense continues to struggle. There was definetly improvement from the Riverside series that could also be contributed to the lower level opponent that was faced. Cats struck the ball well at times but credit Omaha's defense for making big plays, especially a diving catch that likely prevented us from having runners on second and third with no outs in the 8th. Cam Thompson who came into the game batting over .400 was 0 for 5 and Quinton Crandall another one of our top bats was also hitless.
By far the worse loss of the season. Cats better rebound quickly or the hot start to the season will be wasted. My only hope is that some of the lackluster effort the last 4 games was contributed to the cold weather and the forecast warms up with Iowa coming into town for the weekend series.
