The term "young urban tradesmen" is pretty great.

I saw a guy wearing a bike suit riding a unicycle Wednesday. I mentioned to my wife that it was probably the nicest unicycle I've seen on the street because it had a handle and brake. Also I've seen multiple dudes riding unicycles down the street.

Anti-gentrification block party with Google bus pinatas. (Google and several other tech companies have chartered buses that haul gentrifiers from SF down to silicon valley every day and are kind of a symbol of tech company backlash.)

never would have guessed there would be gentrification versus anti-gentrification battles.   (white midwesterner thread).

And this is kind of an Oakland thing (because it involve poors) but I was at my bike valet and this guy in a Raiders' sweatshirt was arguing with the guy that fixed his flat about why he started getting flats all the time. The guy in the shop told him his tire was bad but the guy was still dumbfounded. "I MEAN, I HAD THIS BIKE FOR A YEAR AND A HALF AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH FLATS. THEN IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS I'VE HAD 3. HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT??? I JUST DON'T GET IT!" like he wanted the bike shop guy to give him a new tire or something.

was it already explained in this thread what a bike valet is?   this story makes it sound like a bike  mechanic?

I assume it is a place by where MCat works or lives that is a bike shop and also holds the bike securely for him.  He really could have ended his San Francisco things post with assuming everyone is familiar with bike valets

I thought I went over this, but yeah, Bike Valet is a service at my local BART station (Bart is the train that goes from Oakland to SF) where I can drop off my bike and it is held securely for the day. The guys that take care of the bikes also run a little shop that repairs bikes during the day, so you can have them fix a flat or something while you're at work. It's completely free (for storage) and awesome, especially considering the bike racks at my particular station is a graveyard for bike parts. There are bikes without seats, bikes without wheels, wheels without bikes, just about any configuration you can imagine on the racks.

that's amazing, and given the bike theft rate in california, invaluable.  oh, and mcat, if you see a good bike in my size for sale anytime soon, please buy it for me.  i'll drive up and pick it up whenever you let me know you've secured it.

i'm willing to go up to $50 for a really good bike, but $20 would be better.

i had a guy offer me one for $5, but we were both in a hurry and i didn't even stop to look it over.  there's a lot more bikes in the bay area though, it should be easier to find quality.

yeah but you have to pay for it here because so many bikes are used as primary transportation.

So they want to keep part of SF kinda-sorta run down so lower income people have a place to live?  This is probably the first time i've ever really heard of this.  I mean, I've heard of people fighting someone trying to improve an area, but it's usually because their grandfather built their house 80 years ago and they want to stay in the house.  I don't think I've ever heard of it for the reasons listed on that flier.  I've also heard of people complaining about rent going up very quickly, but I don't think I've ever heard it coupled with "because they are trying to make the area nicer."  Then again, I've never lived in an area where land is limited because it's surrounded by water.

This is pretty much correct. But most of the complaining is from middle-income folks (like the types who can afford to go to music festivals) who don't like the new kinds of people and businesses coming in, our their expensive rent. It's really fascinating to watch as an outsider.
