what are the preexisting beliefs?

i'll answer for myself since i can't speak as well for jilani.

that san francisco enjoys one of the most blessed locations for a city on earth and should naturally be one of the best places on earth to live, but san franciscans have spent the last few decades turning it into an overpriced shithole instead.

good thread that sums up how i view sf, except it doesn't fully express my absolute befuddlement at how the people that live there could allow this to happen under their watch.

like, yes, sure there are also "nice" neighborhoods in sf.  but it also costs like 4m to buy a relatively shitty house in those neighborhoods, which is just a different example of how sf has mumped itself over.  and also there's no reason for there to be any shitty neighborhoods in sf.  sf itself is just the nicest part of the bay area which as a whole is insanely rich.

most of the crap that these twitter folks talk about happens in a pretty small area and doesn't impact many wealthy people. Most of the city is still pretty great (but expensive).

Not sure what to do about the drug markets, but they have needed to build way more housing all over the Bay for years.

This Twitter thread is not enlightening. It's a thread of anecdotal stories you could find in any city. I've stayed between Market/Mission Streets multiple times in the past couple years (Palace Hotel), walked around the area, and never felt unsafe. Did get accosted by a homeless guy in The Mission, though, about 7 years ago.

i think la, sf, portland and perhaps to a slightly lesser degree seattle stand apart categorically from other u.s. cities in terms of homeless encampments and open drug use.  and u.s. cities in general stand apart categorically from cities in most of the rest of the world in terms of the degree of public disorder considered acceptable.

Yes and also New York has a right to shelter law that helps a ton. San Francisco also isn't helped by most of the nonsense going on a couple blocks from the largest concentration of tourist hotels.

Yeah it was in response to the tweet about how the place is so wealthy it's wild that there's crime. Obviously the poor folks of San Francisco shouldn't live like they do! You could say the same about the entire country!

i'm pretty surprised to see nyc that high on the list, but otherwise it's about what i'd expect.  homelessness is a west coast problem.

I think it's both the type of homelessness and the number of beds at play here. Plus a lot more I'm sure.

it'll probably take a fair bit more, but i think at some point sf will respond to people thinking it's a shithole by trying to make it suck less.

handing the keys to the lender isn't typically the preferred way to exit a property.

but i do agree that the two hotels that went down last week because convention planners don't think anyone would voluntarily spend a weekend in sf is a stronger signal.

Eh I think the hotels have a lot to do with no one working on offices in downtown SF (so no reason to visit) while the retail is more about crime and reputation hit associated with the areA

Going to keep an eye on real estate prices. Not quite where I need it to be yet
