Haven’t spent a ton of time right there, but I think actively gentrifying? It seems fairly nice. It’s not a very big area

i dunno what sort of % to put on it, but if i had to bet on one person to replace harris as ca's junior senator, i think i'd pick breed.

She'd probably do way better at the state level

upcoming FB event

Quote
No More Tech Office Spaces In The Mission

Join the battle for racial equity by telling the Board of Supervisors the development of 2300 Harrison into a larger Tech Hub will harm our community!
*2300 Harrison Street is a tech-office project that will directly connect with an existing tech office building that was illegally converted to offices in the late 90s. The two buildings combined will create nearly 100,000 sq. ft. of tech offices.
The project gained approval by the Planning Commission by exploiting a state density bonus law, meant for housing, not offices, by building a tiny amount of housing on top of a huge office building in order to abuse the intent of the law to maximize profits.
This is like dumping a block of the Financial District into the Mission's working-class Latino neighborhood.
As many as 650+ tech workers could be added along with 24 units of housing are proposed for this enormous influx of upscale workers! The project will only cause more displacement and hyper-gentrification. They propose only 6 moderately-affordable housing units to house our threatened Mission families.
Communities of color are severely underrepresented in the tech industry and this project contains NO EQUITY COMPONENTS to provide opportunity for our low-income and working-class communities of color.
Projects like these continue to displace our most vulnerable neighbors and must be stopped. We've already lost 8,000 Latinos from the Mission!!!
Add this event to your calendar -- and to join us August 18th at 3pm to call in and demand that the Supervisors support our right to equitable planning for our community. They should deny this office project unless it is completely redone to meet the needs of our low-income and Latino community in this time of dire crisis.
Additional information will be posted as we get closer to the date

Been listening to this. Claims (believably imo) that the people advocating for middle income transplant types are very different from people advocating for low income and/or longtime resident types. Makes me wonder to what extent solutions for these groups actually overlap.

I still find it difficult to be terribly sympathetic toward the former group. Though, I'm not at all opposed to them. I can see value in ensuring affordable housing within commutable distances.

My sense is the new folks (YIMBYS) would be much more willing to find common ground and have definitely lobbied for affordable housing at times. But I'm also that type of transplant.

Common ground with the longtime residents? I can see how they might feel equally threatened by yimbys and nimbys. Either could price them out.

Yeah, poorer long term residents.

They usually align with NIMBYS and it doesn't often seem to be in their best interest. Like there's a disbelief on supply and demand

I can see how they could incorrectly view developers as their enemy, which would make the nimbys their allies.

The author of the book suggested that tech company workers and their busses were incorrectly viewed as the enemy a few years back and that the focus has since shifted to housing. I thought that was interesting.

The tech busses were/are about housing. Rents went up near stops.

I need to read this book I think

The tech busses were/are about housing.

I worded that poorly. The author said the tech workers were wrongly blamed for housing price increases and that the people who fought against housing development deserved more of that blame.

That makes sense. But often the people against housing are the same ones against the techies!

I have no idea what any of them are thinking, but these kinds of changes (tech workers, developers, expensive coffee shops, etc.) exemplify gentrification, which is probably what they feel threatened by and want to resist - even housing.

I'm not sure the low income people would be wrong to feel like they're mumped with or without more housing.

Interesting map on how Prop 13 impacts property tax. (Prop 13 caps property tax increases and only is reassessed when a property is sold.) Basically if you got in early you're golden and if you didn't good luck.

https://www.officialdata.org/ca-property-tax/

here's what a block in SF where pretty much every building is the same looks like:

If a family member owns a house that you inherit after their death is your tax rate reassessed or do you still get to keep paying their super low rate?
