I will never own property in San Francisco

http://sfist.com/2015/05/19/18th_street_duplex_sells_for_114_pe.php

A note on this: the supervisor for this district proposed a moratorium on new market rate housing in this neighborhood, because working-class families are being displaced. It's so absurd.

Serious question: why doesn't SF build some massive condo towers to house the hordes of boring tech people with money who want to live there?  This could retain some of what's left of the city's character (assuming they're tearing down warehouses rather than victorians to build them), reduce demand for older housing, and liven up the small timey skyline.  They really should have a chat with Vancover and Seattle about their more practical approaches to city planning.  It seems pretty obvious that severe housing supply contraints are to blame here.

Like lib said...they don't what to. This project was replacing a parking lot and tennis courts, went to a vote, and got destroyed:

http://m.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/8-Washington-condo-project-loses-big-in-S-F-4958982.php

There's also a project at honestly the shittiest intersection in the city that replaces a burger king that people are currently going apeshit over (and is a factor in the proposed moratorium):

http://abc7news.com/realestate/sf-activists-protest-monster-in-the-mission-project/544834

At the same time, the people against any new market rate housing recognize a supply problem because they also hate Airbnb for taking so much residential housing off the market. (And they actually have a point there)

8 Washington doesn't look like the misplaced tower or "wall" that I'd imagined. Sort of reinforces the idea to me that people objected to it more on (perhaps misguided) principle than anything, which I'm totally fine with.

Lots of fascinating stuff there. I'm intrigued by the Mayor, the startup city, and whatever the hell is going on here:

Ron Conway (the white guy) is a big airbnb investor that that site hates and the puppy is SF Mayor Ed Lee.

"Leap" transit has been pretty hilarious to follow. It was a pretty ridiculous concept where you ride on "fancy" buses on a single route between the Marina (the fratty neighborhood) to the Financial District. I'd see them from time-to-time and they were always empty.

They took out the ADA capabilities on their buses, got some crap from it in the media, and then got shut down:

http://www.upout.com/blog/san-francisco-3/5-castles-that-are-cheaper-than-an-apartment-in-san-francisco

it looks like the castle in the marche is just a restored watchtower.  the rest of the building is presumably unrestored.  still interesting for 800k euros.

that site has some other interesting properties listed.  thanks for the link.

i like this one a fair bit.  but 865 seems a little steep.  it'd be perfect for benji.

Ditto, I was on page 2 when I caught this quote and I realized something was off. "Lapping and his wife, a doctor, paid $145,000 for a two-bedroom home in what was a few years ago a blue-collar, Latino neighborhood, Noe Valley. Like most of the newer residents, both he and his wife work."

And how about this quote, just screams san fran (In my outsider midwest opinion)

"There should be some industries that employ blue-collar people," he said. "But at the same time, I worked awfully hard not be be blue collar."

I adore articles like this:

Quote
“People are buying Victorians and they are going super modern,” said Scott Bowles, former manager of San Francisco Victoriana, a supplier of building materials for restoring Victorian homes, which closed in April. “They are ruining the city.”

here's one of the destructions:

I'm watching a recap of this on TV. When I was there, I ran by the swim course and saw people swimming in wetsuits. I thought they were crazy. The race seems awesome, though.
