Isn't money property? Isn't property necessarily the only thing taxable?

Property taxes give local governments incentive to operate in a way that increases land values. In theory, they also work to push land to be sold to the highest value use, unless you run into situations like farmland in Kansas, where the land is taxed on its use value, rather than the value it would be sold at.

Where title to property is transferred from one party to another? No, I'm familiar with the idea.

Is it more absurd than being taxed on money you own?

Taxing transactions seems pretty logical, and your employer giving you money is a transaction. I would be against taxing your savings account.

I guess I just don’t understand why it’s logical to tax the process of coming to own property but illogical to tax owning property. I guess they could tax every event that affects your property’s value instead of simply taxing the overall value, but seems like you come out about the same.

America is unusual in funding its public schools through property taxes. The result is that America is one of only three advanced countries that spends more on richer pupils than poor ones (the other two are Turkey and Israel) http://econ.st/1CbCoNH

Does this article address that many if not all states roll up poorer school systems to a minimum threshold?  Does it take into account that poorer school systems qualify for higher federal subsidization?   Does it mention that poorer school systems get paid out the highest percentage levels on the Federal E-Rate program in many cases only paying 10 cents on the dollar for data networks and Internet Access and for equipment (routers, switches, WLAN AP's) to facilitate driving Internet Access to the classroom??   A poorer school system could buy a million dollars worth of new switches and WLAN Access Points and only play $100K.

What claim over property, however, does an individual truly have if he or she must pay the government for the right to keep the property? Although no private property belongs to the government, the government does, through property taxes, have such substantial power over property to effectively render ownership rights as nothing more than a mere privilege.

That author is making an argument for abolishing property tax by appealing to radical new world ideals that never included abolishing property tax.

Taxing real property incentivizes efficient land use.
