that is really hard work. but if it came down to a choice between roofing and working in a packing plant / meat factory, I would choose roofing.

Those are late '90's / 2000's wages for roofers. You aren't getting an American citizen doing that kind of work; this is why they cross the border and these kinds of businesses are thankful.
