JFK was pretty bad. I guess he avoided war w/ the Cuba thing, but he also started the Vietnam war.

His support of the Apollo program was pretty great, but other than that, yeah . . .

FDR:

-Set up the WPA after the great depression
-Established the SEC
-Established the FDIC
-Repealed Alcohol prohibition
-Established the minimum wage
-Social Security Act
-Oversaw defeat of Nazi Germany

So to sum up, he got us out of the great depression and through most of world war II.

Overall I would say pretty successful and rated right where he should be.

Also gave away half of Europe to Stalin setting up the cold war.
Never really got us out of the great depression(that would be WWII and the fact that we were the only industrialized country that was not reduced to rubble)
Not to mention the whole court packing scandal which is actually a really huge deal that no one seems to remember.

So, you would have preferred an actual war with Russia instead of a cold one?

That wasn't just FDR, so let's not muddy the waters by pinning that whole thing him since all of western europe was ok with that. Also, the conservatives and isolationists in this country didn't even want us coming to the aid of the allies in the first place, so he compromised and gave stalin half. Of note, Hitler would have succeeded even more if it wasn't for stalin so he gets a little credit for saving western europe.

Yeah, Churchill was a huge fan of Russia and had no problem with them grabbing all of eastern europe.

The fact is FDR was in failing health during the yalta conference and pretty out of it for most of 1945. Combined with the fact that no one bothered to tell Truman anything it set the stage for Stalin to Mush the allies when they asked him about post war elections.

And why was their economy crumbling? Defense spending trying to keep up. Gorby knew they could no longer keep their crap together.

This is way off base. FDR kept unemployment way higher than it should have been in the Great Depression through wage and labor laws

The SEC is a joke.

the FDIC encourages mal investment by banks. So it's a joke

Prohibition thing is awesome, tho

Social Security will be a joke in several years

And as already pointed out, the depression ended because of the incredible advantage the US had over the rest of the world after WWII...not FDR's policies

The govt. fabricated ww2 as a form of stimulus for the US manf industry?

Other terrible FDR stuff include: conscripting the atom bomb, lying to his citizens about his debilitating disease.

Glad we have a consensus he was the worst.

Federal rationing of goods
Those weird ag quotas that were the foundation of his stacked courts horrible decision in Wickard to extend the commerce clause to everything including things that aren't interstate commerce . Basically set the federal govts jurisdiction to everything.

Not sure what's behind the Reagan hate, but he did what Obama can't or won't do.

Raise taxes?

No, compromise and work with the other party to pass bills he may not like for the good of the country.

Tough to work with the other party when people from the other party like McConnel are on record stating that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president"

Also, the people saying that JFK is overrated are right.  He would be looked upon much more negatively by history if he wasn't assassinated.  He shouldn't even get that much credit for the Cuban Missile Crisis, as UN Secretary General U Thant was the main reason the Russians were even willing to negotiate with the US.  Thant should get the lion's share of the credit for America and Russia not bombing each other off the map because of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I knew majoring in history would eventually pay off!

At the end of ww2 there was a feeling that the great depression was returning and the economy was generaly crap in 45-46.

The thing that ended the great depression was artificially supressing demand for 5 years during the war. Once consumers were finally able to buy that new dishwasher(made in the usa because every other country is in ruin) they had wanted the economy took off.

but the depression was over before WWII started, like I said. The ridiculous growth didn't occur until after.

Why do the libs keep bringing this up. It's called politics and this has always been the most important thing to the leaders of the opposing party.
