Ski in order to truly enjoy life
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:07:13 PM »
For all of the  :kstategrad: happening around the world, I'm truly shocked that there is no thread about skiing.  I am currently fortunate enough to be on a ski trip with scottwildcat, Spaces, 3maw and SliceOfLime in Breckenridge, and it is an amazing time.  Any comments, raves, suggestions, notions, criticisms, jokes, commentaries, narratives, or preferences about skiing should be shared on this thread!

I just got back from my first ski trip. It was incredible and I may consider becoming a ski person (bunny?)

Breckenridge

Broke my kneecap into 3 peices there in 8th grade and now can do that thing where you can feel a storm coming in your joint.
I got a guy on the other line about some white walls

I must say it is impressive that you enjoyed your FIRST ski trip, as it usually takes several forced trips for most to appreciate the beauty of skiing. Where did you ski? Tell us all about the experience, for that is what this thread is about. Also mods I thought skiing is a sport but if you think auntie maes board is more appropriate, feel free to move.

Winter Park. Took a lesson the first day. Instructor was really fun. Learned some basics. Most important being ditching yourself before you crash into something or someone.

On day 2 I fell over probably 20 times. Getting back up is exhausting.

On day 4 finally got a feel for my edges figured out parallel turns/stops but my body started breaking down. Day 5 started to trust myself with some speed. Day 6 was really feeling it And took down some easy blues after juicing hardcore with Advil to blast through some of the knee pain.

Condo had a hot tub which helped with nightly recovery. Hot tubs are basically my favorite thing.

Got altitude sickness maybe on the 2nd night and yakked my brains out.

Got drunk off 1/2 the normal amount of drinks.

Had several elite high speed wipeouts

Maybe this is the wrong thread, but binge'ing in Breckenridge is better than binge'ing in other places.

LOVE that you skied 6 DAYS on your first ski trip. Completely agree that hot tubs are the best thing in the world and plan to get one as soon as I am  :kstategrad:. Thanks for sharing.

Skiid Winter Park for 6 days. It was pretty tough to learn but by the end I was feeling it.

First day took an all day lesson. It was a blast, the instructor was great. Learned the basics, most importantly ditching before you crash into someone or something and how to get up. Also maybe got altitude sickness and yakked my brains out at 3 AM

Day 2 fell over about 20 times. Getting up is exhausting. Luckily the condo had an awesome hot tub for nightly recovery.

Day 4 I was finally getting a feel for my edges and figured out parallel turns / stops. Huge moment for me. Also got comfortable enough to appreciate the natural splendor around me.  My body definitely started breaking down though. Lots of knee twisting forces taking a toll.

Day 5 got more comfortable at speed and really started feeling like I could ski.

Day Six really felt like a skiier and conquered a few easy blues with the help of a massive juicing of Advil.

Ski people all seemed to be very happy.

Got drunk off like 1/2 the normal drink.

Fell getting off the first lift of the day every day except for the last day, which felt like a major accomplishment.

High on the mountain is incredible. Like a totally different planet from Kansas.

Winter Park was very cool. The networks of lifts and ski trails and sublifts made me feel like a real explorer.

Excited to ski again and build on what I learned with a fully recovered body. Future ski brony right here.

Have always skiied and don't want to take a couple days from one of my very rare ski trips to learn how to snowboard, but I think snowboarding would be really fun.

I thought Breckenridge was pretty boring overall.  I had a lot of fun on Peak 9 (I think) and on the total opposite side of the place in the trees.  Other than that, it's sort of all the same super wide, gently sloping long run.  Not enough fun for an entire day, IMO.

Winter Park is great because Mary Jane is great.

But all the places are equally good for beginners.

my favorite part is when you get to the lift/any area you interact with "workers" and theyre from another country.

like if you ask the operator at the base how icy it is and they throw some Australian accent at you, you're all like "what?"

Boots really did suck. Just putting them on and buckling them was totally exhausting not to mention trying to walk in them.
