Fiesta Bowl/Oregon FB Discussion
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:20:11 AM »
FWIW, I will be rolling out exclusive Fiesta Bowl previews over the next few days leading up to the game. I'm currently in the process of watching at least 4-5 full Oregon games and breaking down their offense in similar fashion to my breakdowns of K-State's offense. I will do something on their defense and special teams.

Expect the first installment late tonight or tomorrow.

Watching/breaking down Oregon's offense is exhausting. They don't do a lot of stuff, but man they play fast running nearly 18 more plays per game on ave than K-State. That said, plenty of Big 12 teams play at similar speeds; Baylor, OK State, Tech.

Are you finding it to be true that they really are simply a team that runs "normal" running plays out of a spread formation?  Or, is there more to it.  Some have been suggesting that is the case....but, I'm not qualified to agree or disagree....

Yes.

Early impressions... 2/3 of their plays will be runs. 3/4 of their runs will be some sort of zone read and they read everybody. I'm just watching the Oregon State game and they have read (left unblocked) literally every position in OSU's front 7.

So, is it because their backs are so shifty/fast that they can make that work so well?

Yes, that mixed with the speed at which they play gets people out of position. Having Zimm back will help a lot with that.

Texas' ability to have some big plays on the edge scares me for this game. Maybe Ty will help.

Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

_FAN, apologies in advance if this is a derpy sounding question but has Oregon faced either a defense or offense comparable to the wild wild cats this season? I guess I feel like the pac12 really did not compare well to the big 12 but admittedly that analysis is based purely on eyeball test comparisons, through big12 lenses to boot. Figured you'd probably have an opinion based more heavily in statistics and sound logical reasoning to support one way or the other.

Still early in the 1st half of the Stanford game, but Oregon threw a lot against Stanford. Not quite as dramatic of a game, but reminded me of our Baylor game a bit. And seeing the Baylor "highlights" as the game goes along is very :blindfold:.

Oregon Ducks versus Kansas State Wildcats
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (Jan. 3)
Oregon is favored by 9 points
Oregon and Kansas State are championship-caliber organizations that get our business on a regular basis. The Ducks are talented enough to deserve the favorite's mantle and well-coached enough to blunt one of the Wildcats' regular advantages. Only seven teams have vanquished Chip Kelly, but it is striking just how well this underdog matches up in its attempt to become the eighth.

Oregon's offense doesn't have many weaknesses, but the ones it does have are as follows: a propensity for fumbling, a tendency to allow tackles for loss, a habit of accruing penalties and an inability to hit long pass plays. Kansas State seems perfectly suited to exploit what few edges Oregon makes available, as the Wildcats cause and collect fumbles, rack up tackles behind the line, accumulate virtually no penalties themselves, and deny cheap scores on long plays.

This Oregon defense is the best Kelly has had, but the Ducks do consistently allow long, methodical multiplay rushing drives and rely quite heavily on their NCAA-leading number of takeaways. Kansas State is perfectly suited to craft the kind of possessions Oregon permits, and the Wildcats boast sublime ball security.

Until last year, the knock on Oregon was that it couldn't beat a physical, downhill team, couldn't win a big game away from Autzen and couldn't conquer the postseason. Wins over Stanford on the Farm and Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl slew those demons, but it's still worth noting that a Fiesta date with Collin Klein and the Wildcats profiles much like Kelly's past defeats.

We won't deny that the favorite is the better team in a vacuum, but the Wildcats match up quite well and field the nation's best special teams to boot. Giving this many points is a generous bonus in a toss-up game between two of the nation's best that we think could be lower-scoring than most project.

The pick: Kansas State 31, Oregon 28

That's only because of LHC Bill Snyder's grind it out game plan.  Oregon runs the fifth most plays per game average at 84.2 and K-State runs the fifth least at 65.  Plus even with all these plays, their time of possession is only ranked #96 in D1 football vs K-State at #18.  Obviously due to their high powered offense and ability to go 80 yards in less time than it takes LifeofFitz to eat a bucket of KFC.  This game isn't going to be won by time of possession or number of plays but how many yards per play K-State's D can hold Oregon to and turnovers.  Zimmerman is a lock for one INT.  Mark it down.
