Absolutely zero research behind this, but this team seems much less penalized, much more concise, much more consistent, and much more disciplined.

I'm having a hard time finding stats from 1998, but I'll update this when I find it.

Average # of penalties per game:
1998: 10.2
2012: 3.4

Average penalty yards per game
1998: 80.2
2012: 26.9

Average turnovers per game
1998: 1.6
2012: 0.6

This team is much better than '98 team, though that team should have won it all that year. IMO the '03 team is a more fair comparison, that team was stacked from top to bottom, and when healthy ran through everyone, had Ell not broke his hand that year I believe we would of won the title. If any of you fuckers were at the "Bowling for Gumbo" tailgate during the Cal game at Arrowhead in '03 then let it be know that I fully blame you for jinxing us and will only forgive you when we win a MNC. As for this team I believe that this is the most fundamentally sound team I have ever seen play and the best overall "team",  gotta take it one game at time with these guys though. Starts with the sand aggies this week.

To me, that speaks to the talent of the '98 team. 0 discipline and still almost made the NC.

This was a 98 type game no doubt. That being said, 98 was full of these type of games. I want to see more games like this before I'm ready to jump on the "this team is better than the 1998 team" bandwagon.

Most of those games in '98 were against pud teams

Yeah, the 98 team had ZERO games like @WVU or @OU. I guess UT was kind of close, but @CU was probably a better comparo. 16-9.

This^  and Texas wasn't ranked when we played them and finished the season barely in the top 20

On Petro's show today, on 810am in KC, they discussed this.  All the games in 98 were blowouts, except for four.  Four games were 10 points or less; against Colorado (ranked 14 when we played them), Nebraska (finished 19), Mizzou (finished 21), and aTm (finished 11).

The other games we won in 1998 were against some terrible teams.  We did what you are supposed to do against terrible teams, we beat their asses.  Badly.

But, this year's team has already won road games against 3 ranked opponents.  One of which was a blow out.

If you would have asked me three weeks ago, I would have told you it was rough ridin' blasphemy to compare ANY K-State team to 1998.  I am open to this idea now.  If we win out, they ARE better.  There really isn't a debate.

Half the Big 12 won less than 8 games in 1998, and we played 4 non con games.

Kansas 4–7
Iowa State    3–8
Texas Tech    7–5
Oklahoma State   5–6
Oklahoma 5–6
Baylor 2–9

We played 3 non-cons, all against pud. That said, they still blew it at the end, so if this team is better than a team that should have made the NC game then that is good...

I don't think 98 offense is better than 12, I have never seen a offense that can score at what ever pace it wants. Bill can have the offense slowly move the ball down the field and score in 9 mins or dial up a mean 2 min drive. It is truly insane and we haven't got deep into the playbook, all the gadget plays are sitting in the playbook waiting for a rainy day.

The offense is better now because the risk is so much lower. The passing game goes down field less, but stays effective.

We basically never run the traditional option and therefore greatly reduce risky pitches.

Someone should compare ypp or something.

Also Bill offense is better now with todays defenses, nobody is use to stacking the box and man coverage. It really isn't fair.

From _FAN's stats:

1998 - 6.47 YPP, 0.65 PPP
2012 - 6.94 YPP, 0.68 PPP

That said, '98's would be quite a bit higher through the first 7 games I bet.

I think a strong argument exist for "98 at its best" is better than "12 at its best" but "12 at it worst" is better than "98 at it worst."  Maybe the team that wouldn't shoot itself in the foot is better to have. :dunno:
