Elbow Injury : ContusionA contusion refers to a bruise of the soft tissue. In this injury, force was not sufficient to cause a bone fracture. A well recognized elbow contusion results when impact is made to the inner aspect of the elbow, involving a nerve. This injury, more commonly known as striking your "funny bone", occurs as the result of a contusion to the ulnar nerve, which supplies sensation to the hand. For the most part, this is a nonserious contusion, known as a neuropraxia.Common symptoms of contusions include swelling and pain to the point of impact.Contusions will usually not interfere with range of motion in the joint. Treatment includes ice packs, elevation, and rest of the injured limb.Splinting the elbow (at 90 degrees) will be helpful in more serious contusions, or those suspected for fracture. Pain relief may be accomplished with acetaminophen, aspirin, or anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen). Persistent pain or numbness of the hand should always be evaluated by a physician. Evaluation should include bone x-rays to exclude the possibility of fracture or dislocation.
Praise the Latter Day Saints! Jake is back in the game.
