Forgive me for jumping in late here, but I have a theory on how the right went crazy...

Sarah Palin.

She was such a horrible candidate that had no business even being in the discussion to be nominated for VP that the media absolutely destroyed her (incidentally, I feel strongly the same "Liberal" media would have destroyed a Democrat had they been dumb enough to nominate one that was as Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) as her)...BUT when the "Liberal" media "attacked" Sarah Palin, people got pissed and dug in. All of a sudden, they absolutely HAD to defend crazy crap because it is better to defend crazy crap than let a black man become prez. Defending crazy became a habit, and now it it is necessary.

The sad thing is, I have no idea where it is going to stop, especially when you have Beck, Hannity, Rush, Palin, etc so willing & ready to feed the trolls because they are getting FILTHY rough ridin' rich off of these people.

I enjoy the phrase "defending crazy".
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

Yes the question is about the Right and not about any of their candidates specifically.  The Southern Strategy is starting to run out of steam now that the demographics of the country are getting browner.  But really they've dug in with these extreme anti-tax, anti-environment, anti-helping anybody who isn't rich stands on issues.

Abortion, Gay Marriage, Racism aren't enough to convince people to vote for them if they're going to wreck the economy and the safety net.  The reason the Republicans swept in 2010 is because no Democrats went to the polls.  The arguments that the 33% of the country that is hard-right is presenting to the rest of the country is not even on the map.  Their proposals are off the deep end.  If they don't moderate their views they're gonna get it handed to them again in 2016.

I think that is pretty accurate.  They took the crazy stances and now they have a whole demographic that has been taught that the crazy platform is totally normal and acceptable and, better yet, totally supported by God and the founding fathers.

This could be said of the left, also.

Out of all these Rush is BITB. My dad takes his word for gospel....pretty much everytime I see him its "did you know obama wasnt born here, did you know blah blah blah whatever rush said that day"

I just dont understand how fairly normal educated people like my father can view these people as news sources and not the entertainers that they are. They are no different than comedians or actors.

On a side note I loved it when Rush got busted for prescription pills...unfortunately that did nothing to stop the juggernaut that is the EIB Network.

I think losing this election (badly) will be a good thing for the Right. Like when Nebraska kept getting boat-raced in Orange Bowls until Tom Osborne realized they needed (per his euphemism) more "quicker, Miami-type players".

Substitute "voters" for "players" and that's basically what the Right needs, too.

they are going to have to.  The country's demographics are shifting, whether anyone likes it or not.  You simply cannot win by being a rich, entitled, pretty moron who allows planks of bigotry in his platform.

My dad is a huge Rush fan too, but it's more entertainment to him than it is news. It's like sports talk radio.

Side note...the Republicans need to do something because when Texas flips (and it eventually will), they're screwed.

So, yeah, the clock is ticking.

We're not flipping for another 20-30 years. The republicans mostly elected tea party nutballs in their primaries, and because it's Texas they'll win those seats not located in the Valley and downtown Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. We're going to keep veering to the right as long as Obama's in office and probably a while after that. The main question is whether we'll elect somebody more conservative/insane than Rick Perry (!) as our next governor at this point. It's going to take a while for hispanics to move here with the numbers needed to counteract what has been a very pronounced shift to the right. There are no moderates here anymore.

Most of you are seriously delusional. As far right as some republicans have gone, some dems have gone just as far left. The wave of tea party candidates is in response to what Pelosi and Reid did in the first 2 years of Obama's reign, not because there were fewer democrats voting. I don't like the far right any more than you, but be realistic, the left is going to "Greece" this country.

Yeah, anybody who thinks the right will return to sanity after getting throttled in this presidential election is just wrong. Rush and Hannity will just trumpet that they were right in that nominating Mitt cost the republicans the election because he's too moderate. They will claim that the only way the republicans can win in 2016 is to nominate somebody like Santorum or Palin, and most the the republican base will eat it up.

Pelosi and Reid have always been far left, though, and they are not popular at all outside of their own states. For the most part, any perceived movement to the far left by the democratic party is really just due to the extreme right stance necessary for any republican to keep office with the tea party around. The most "far left" policy Obama has implemented was copied directly from a republican governor. If anything, he's moved a long way to the right from where he was during his 2008 campaign.

Obama was the most liberal democrat in the senate - when he voted (not that often). He has only moved away from the far, far, far left by necessity and the fact that reality has forced him there. Those constraints won't be as tight if he gets a second term, and he will "executive order" the country into oblivion, until he is impeached.

The thing of it is...if half the crap that Beck, Hannity, Rush, et all said about Obama was actually true...I'd hate the guy too.

Fortunately, no matter how many times they lie & make crap up, The facts remain the facts

They cheated Ron Paul out of a lot of delegates. It started in Iowa, then other states like Maine, Nevada, and Louisiana. Ron Paul supporters were intimidated and even arrested at state conventions. What a rough ridin' clown show of a party.

Then the Republicans go and change the party rules to ensure that no grass roots candidates can ever be successful in the party, ever. Tea Party? Forget about it.

I mean I consider myself pretty conservative (except social issues, which don't matter in any way). But how am I supposed to support this crap show?
