I guess they are still crazy about birth control so I'll say they quit being incredibly racist/sexist.

they also quit actively helping the nazis exterminate a race.

Didn't know that.  I just knew the Pope who refused to oppose the Nazis and then ran a rat line for the war criminals was.

I am learning a lot today.

Yep, why can't the GOP just alter their positions and let the radicals leave? Seems much easier than starting over. I mean, as an example, it's clear that gay rights are the civil rights issue of our day. Smart members of the right know this. They can change their stance on this whenever they want. The hick states can vote some out of office but eventually it's going to be a 100% thing (except in the deep south). Religions will alter their stance on it as well (some already have). They've changed thousands of times in the past to adjust for the times and this item is no different. If nothing else, look into the history books at every civil rights vote ever, and decide where you want to be written about.

As someone who grew up in the catholic church/schools that also supports gay marriage, good rough ridin' luck.

the catholic church has changed their stance on tons of stuff in the past. they inevitably will on this as well.

Maybe I'm just drawing a blank here, but when did the Catholic church change their minds on a social issue as big as gay marriage/abortion?

Hitler was born and raised Catholic, but never did anything Catholic after leaving home and actually leaned more protestant.  However, the pope did throw all non-catholics under the bus in 1933 by signing what was basically a treaty never to get involved in the politics in return for catholics being left alone by the Nazi's.  I wouldn't really consider him catholic if he forced them to sign a treaty to be left alone.  Signing the treaty then using it as an excuse not to get involved is also pretty sad.

I just wish the right would start to ignore the radical religious/tea party types and start dealing exclusively with the intellectual middle-right. you are going to take your lumps in hick states for doing so but long term I think it's the only way to pull out of the tail spin. a pro-science, pro-economy, socially-moderate right would do very well today if it could get wheels underneath it.

Here's the thing about pandering to the extreme side of the spectrum of either party:  Those extremists are going to vote for their party regardless.  Never understood why so much time, effort, and face is lost in trying to relate to them.  It's not like the crazy bible gun nuts are ever going to vote blue.  both parties should deal in the middle of their spectrum.  the extremists will always vote the party line.

You have to pander to them because moderates do not usually follow politics as closely as the hardcore extremists, and are less likely to turn out for the primaries. Independents are also not allowed to vote in the primaries, so candidates have to pander to the crazies if they want to get on the ballot for the general election.

someone should run on the platform of "not pandering to the crazies" and then just get smoked in the KS primaries but make a pretty hilarious point in doing so.

I think most of the republicans in the Kansas Senate did this in the most recent primary. The political ads said they were just way too liberal, obamacare, etc., etc. and they all got smoked by the true conservatives. We are going to need to stock up on popcorn for this upcoming legislative session.

Last time I was at St. Isadore's they had an openly gay couple in their choir.  :dunno:

A few cylces from now, there will be ppl talking about how we should give up electricity since it's the devil's work, how Child labor laws are complete bullshit, how the Industrial Rev was the good old days, and how Jesus supports the 17 hr work day.

Maybe if you go by what the word "conservative" actually means, but in the 2012 election, somebody calling him/herself a "true conservative" is probably a crazy.
