2. Kansas State Wildcats
The Wildcats began the season ranked 22nd in the AP poll. They were very impressive in a 52-13 win against Miami, but it was a 24-19 victory at Oklahoma that really turned the heads of voters. K-State was the first ranked team to beat the Sooners in Norman under Bob Stoops, and the Wildcats did it in typical LHC Bill Snyder fashion, with a superior running game and a plus-three turnover margin.
There is one major hurdle looming on the Cats' path to a potential undefeated season -- an Oct. 20 visit to West Virginia. That's not to say that road trips to TCU and Baylor, or home dates with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma State Cowboys and Texas Longhorns, will be easy. But from a KSU perspective, that road sure looks more manageable than it did one month ago.
The Wildcats also benefit from their conference, the Big 12, which has a sparkling 26-3 record in nonleague play, which will give KSU a BCS boost. And if Miami can make some noise in the ACC, that would further bolster Kansas State's national championship résumé
