College graduates without career jobs lined up
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:08:58 AM »
My office is frequently hiring for what I'd consider to be non-4-year-degree jobs (basically just helping me kick ass).  We get tons of applicants who've recently graduated from ku and wsu, and I have no idea why they're applying for this hourly wage job that couldn't possibly be what one imagined they'd do after college.  I've turned GED former construction workers into capable assistants here.  Other managers tell me it's the economy and that we're lucky to have these college-educated applicants.  I maintain these are people who either really mumped up and never once went to their equivalent of Holtz Hall, or maybe nobody hires squawks/shocks, because we don't get, nor do I know, EMAW grads in career limbo.

Am I wrong?

Not surprising, most majors are completely worthless.

Yep. Also, some people are really bad at interviewing. K-State gives you the proper skills to stare someone in the face and be able to relay the message of how bad ass you really are!

EMAW theater shares a building with EMAW Computer Science, so there is probably a residual effect.

EMAW theater major > ku finance major?

I would assume most theater majors understand that there is an extremely low chance of actually landing a job in theater, so they probably just go find a job doing something else after graduation. Finance majors actually expect to get a good job when they graduate, and there just are not many good jobs in this economy that are uncompetitive enough for a KU grad to have much of a chance. Most KU finance majors I know ended up with jobs as bank tellers, and that's if they were even lucky enough to get THAT job.

The job market is just down..

I have a friend who just graduated from Mizzou with a bachelors in Biomedical Engineering and can't find a job. Its all in the luck of the draw, to some extent. Sucks for people who have recently graduated and have to look hard to find jobs, especially if they didn't have their college paid for.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

I picked theater as an example of a worthless major.  I just threw that out as an example to show that apparently even EMAW theater majors are above these jobs, based on the anecdotal evidence I have so far, whereas graduates from other local schools with seemingly more useful backgrounds are applying here like it's an elite opportunity.

Are there EMAWs, who due to no fault of their own, are in post-graduate limbo?  If so, they should add their resume to that directory that has all the EMAW construction/marketing pictures and I'll review them.

i told him he looked like david wallace. it went over pretty well actually. it's kind of one of those things i look back on and think "why did i do that?" but it really wasn't a big deal at the time. the women that was also interviewing laughed too and said that she actually always thought he looked like the guy from "the soup."

The EMAW's have The "Wildcat Nation Network" to help them out. It's where K-Staters meet.
Where did you get that overnight bag?

You need to do on campus interviews.  EMAW majors are getting jobs at Holtz.

That's the thing, this isn't a job appropriate for an EMAW grad, or really any college graduate imo.  But given that we don't get EMAW graduate applicants, I'm confident that I'm correct that it isn't so much "the economy," but rather that the grads who are applying are probably eff-ups, and/or that graduating from ku is worthless.

"The economy" doesn't create some mystical force where nobody in the world but KSU grads can get relevant jobs.

the economy is meaningless when roughly 98% of your graduates are Marshall, Fulbright, Mitchell, Truman, Rhodes or Goldwater scholars.

I've had two jobs since I graduated a couple years ago, KSU is the reason for both of them.

First job I found through the CES thingy in Holtz Hall, KSU grad owns business wants to hire EMAWs.

In the interview for my second job I casually mentioned that I had recently attended a game last week. The VP interviewing me immediately revealed that he had been as well and we spent the rest of the interview talking about how the chamber should be starting over CC.

Its really not that hard when your and EMAW
1.Show up
2.Mention you are EMAW(As if they couldnt tell by your general appearance and smell!)
3.Walk away with job

I literally don't know one K-State grad not working at a decent or great job in their field of study. Meanwhile, my ku friends continue to wait tables, pour beers, and ring up taquitos and chicken logs at Quicktrip
