Did Matt Christopher ever write a basketball book?  If so, I bet that was pretty good.

- Miracle at St. Anthony     Adrian Wojnarowski
Follows legendary HS coach Bob Hurley and his St. Anthony team from Jersey City through a season, I think it's 03-04. Just goes into his coaching tactics, philosophies, and how he built the program into a national power. Also goes into detail about his family's history(sons Bobby and Danny, now both coaching at Rhode Island) and just the whole socioecomic situation in that area.

- Season on the Brink         John Feinstein
Bob Knight is a genius and madman at the same time. That's about the best I can sum it up.

- City Game             Pete Axthelm
Follows the 69-70 NY Knicks who won the NBA title that year and also goes deeply into the NYC playground scene. Earl Manigault, The GOAT!

- Pistol: Life of Pete Maravich       Mark Kriegel
Documents the life of possibly the most skilled player of all time. At times inspirational, at times haunting. Lessons learned and not learned. Quote on the front of the book says something to the effect "He should have been the best of all time. This book explains why he wasn't". I think that pretty much nails it.

- Drive: Larry Bird bio            Bird and Bob Ryan
Just read it, if you like hoops at all, you'll get a lot out of it.

- If you're interested in KSU and KS HS bball history, I'd recommend the work of Steven Farney. He wrote 1 book about Jack Gardner and KSU history that focused on the 50s and 60s, sort of a golden era for KSU hoops. He also wrote a couple books about KS HS history, 1 talking about Class BB champs from the 50s through 70s(REALLY small towns), the other detailing every KS HS player who has ever scored 50 in a game. His work isn't really deep reading but he provides a ton of good facts and stories if you're interested in KS hoops.

- Play Their Hearts Out            George Dohrmann
I'm only about half way through this book, but I love it. Documents the grassroots/AAU scene in Socal while following the career path of Demetrius Walker(now a reserve guard at New Mexico) from the time he was around 10 through completing HS. For me, really tough to put down once I get reading, I'll probably knock it out this weekend.

Pffffft.  I was an only child growing up in a small town and I sucked at baseball.

When I wasn't trying to play hoops, I was thinking about it.

When I was in middle school I would read something similar to the "history of hoops series" (I can't remember exactly what it was) for the accelerated reader program. They were only about 20 pages long, with pictures, and they were nonfiction so they were worth a shitload of points and were rated at a high enough reading level to appease my teachers. I would just crank through 2 or 3 of those books and be done with the AR tests after the first week of the semester.

Honestly, I've never heard him on the radio so I can't really speak to that, maybe he just needs time to properly articulate his thoughts? :dunno: He never lacked for storylines following Knight around.

Maybe it's just my hoophead bias shining through, but I'm enjoyed the crap out of it.

I guess kids can now just jump on that wikiki thingy and dont have to bother with good ole fashioned paper books.  :frown:

It was several years ago, but I remember loving My Life by Magic Johnson. It was a great story about MJ and college through Showtime. I don't think it was written all that good, I was just a big Lakers fan at the time, so I loved the book.

Strut 'N Cut: Season on the Wink - great protagonists.

Can we be protagonists with a character named Billy Zabka and a guy who picks fights with minors?

It's a new, more aggressive world. Absolutely.

My favorite Feinstein book is The Last Amateurs.  Feinstein is a douche, but a hell of a writer.

Feinstein interviews on Jim Rome

On the Final Four featuring the one and only oscar Weber http://takebox.stucknut.com/?id=12a
On Eldrick Tont Woods http://takebox.stucknut.com/?id=701
On Bob Knight being a quitter, unfortunately doesn't mention him being a hypocrite http://takebox.stucknut.com/?id=e05

The Fab Five. I read this in high school and loved how they would say "let your nuts hang!" prior to breaking huddle after timeouts.
