Winos
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:02:14 PM »
I've always been a Merlot guy myself. I prefer a mixed drink and/or a beer before wine, but the girl I'm dating wants me to pick up some wine tonight. She wants a riesling or red wine. I'd rather go red, any suggestions?

Get something that has an identical-looking non-alcoholic drink so you can remain conscious without appearing to be a pussy.

Mainly cheese and crackers. We both had late lunches.

Don't buy merlot if she knows about wine. If she doesn't know about wine, then buy merlot. I am not trying to come across as an asshat or a wine snob. If she does know about wine, then merlot is not interesting and she would probably like to see you take a risk on a different red. The fact that she told you red or riesling probably means she is not overly into wine, so you can buy a merlot. It is pretty hard to eff up merlot grapes, so anything in the $8-$12/bottle range will work just fine.

Stay at the lower end of that range.  You don't really get much of an improvement from $10 to $30.  About $45/$50 you start to get a marked improvement imo.  That's about as cheap as you can get into the Frogs Leap cabs.  Just get a Mondavi Private Selction cab.  Decent at about $10 a bottle and very dependable.  It's our table wine.

EDIT:  just saw your "not too strong" comment.  yeah, she will slug whatever you bring.  get a cheap malbec.

Rarely do you need to spend $30/bottle to buy a decent bottle of wine. Learning about the region the grapes were produced in and the best years for that region (which are based on weather) will allow you to spend $15/bottle and get a good wine. Of course, there are some instances where it is advisable to have spent more than $15/bottle so people don't think you are being a tight ass. Unfortunately, those people don't often appreciate good wine, just a little more expensive wine.

No one needs to jump down my throat and tell me that I haven't had really good wine. I am fully aware of and have had some of the more expensive wines and how excellent they are. It is just rare that you need to spend a lot of money on a bottle of wine ($50+) to enjoy wine.

Robert Mondavi has a really good Cab Sav for around $14.

I am also a big fan of the Wolf Blass red label Cab Shiraz mix.

I'd go with this, and as you are drinking it talk about its terroir and stuff.  She will love it.

it means she doesn't want a strong red, like Cab Sav, the wine that the majority of you dolts suggested he bring.  if it were me, i'd bring a meritage.  probably cain cuvee. that's too pro tip for fanning.
like sd said, might as well save the money and just slug down some crap malbec that you should be able to find in the discount cart.

You know what I hate?  I hate how red wine leaves your teeth and tongue all purplish-red and stuff.

counter-snobbed:

Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be drunk young-in average vintages it should be consumed by the following May after its release. However, in excellent vintages (such as 2000) the wine can live much longer and can be enjoyed until the next harvest rolls around.
