So I recall a very vocal group on this board liking Billy Clyde as a coach. In the Big XII rankings thread,
several (not all) ranked Gillespie ahead of Weber.
Now, I'm not sure whether there's any overlap between Gillespie lovers and Weber haters, but I don't see a big difference. For the most part, Weber's numbers are better.
1) Both were fired.
2) Both are white men.
3) Weber had a better overall record (.669) than Gillespie (.622) after being fired (
i.e., not even counting last year's 8-23 train wreck for BCG).
4) Weber won 4 conference titles in 14 seasons; Gillespie won 1 in 8 seasons.
5) Weber went to Sweet 16 three times in 14 seasons; Gillespie once in 8 seasons.
6) Weber went to the Elite 8, Final Four, and championship game.
Anyone who loves Billy Clyde and hates Weber, please clue me in. Now, BCG didn't have a losing record at UK (in two seasons) but he sucked bad enough to get fired.
(Of course, maybe BCG sucks as a coach -- his team last year was embarrassing -- in which case this comparison is not complimentary.)
