Weber v. Billy Clyde Gillespie
« on: April 04, 2012, 10:13:02 AM »
So I recall a very vocal group on this board liking Billy Clyde as a coach.  In the Big XII rankings thread, several (not all) ranked Gillespie ahead of Weber.

Now, I'm not sure whether there's any overlap between Gillespie lovers and Weber haters, but I don't see a big difference.  For the most part, Weber's numbers are better.

1)  Both were fired.
2)  Both are white men.
3)  Weber had a better overall record (.669) than Gillespie (.622) after being fired (i.e., not even counting last year's 8-23 train wreck for BCG).
4)  Weber won 4 conference titles in 14 seasons; Gillespie won 1 in 8 seasons.
5)  Weber went to Sweet 16 three times in 14 seasons; Gillespie once in 8 seasons.
6)  Weber went to the Elite 8, Final Four, and championship game.

Anyone who loves Billy Clyde and hates Weber, please clue me in.  Now, BCG didn't have a losing record at UK (in two seasons) but he sucked bad enough to get fired.

 :dunno:

(Of course, maybe BCG sucks as a coach -- his team last year was embarrassing -- in which case this comparison is not complimentary.)

who on earth loves billy clyde?  also, gillespie built aTm from the ground and weber took over a program that was very high level if not elite.  gillespie did suck at KY who is definitely elite.

No, I remember.  People here have terrible memories.  (See surprise over the cost coaching search firms, e.g.)  It was a long time ago, though.  From the superior ksufans site.

Not a huge fan of Billy Clyde but I'd send Weber & Currie to Lubbock in trade for BG and an assistant coach to be named later so fast it would make your head spin.

Yes, I was a fan of BCG. A big difference between his tenure at UK and Weber's tenure at Illinois was BCG got 2 years and Weber got 9. BCG also never had a losing conference record.

I would still prefer him over oscar because he hasn't been given the opportunity to run a program completely into the ground and he recruits texas like a weirdo. Still, I'm allowed to change my mind depending on the context.

Yeah, there was plenty of Billy Clyde love. He obviously did well at A&M and they sucked before he came in, but Melvin left him NBA talent.

I think BCG is much better than Weber. His success at A&M trumps anything Weber has done. His failure at Kentucky was also nowhere near the level of failure Weber had at Illinois.

NO. You pushed the "lost to Wooly" talking point pretty hard.

I change my mind a lot depending on my mood and the audience.

His face seems too small for his head.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Billy built aTm, Weber tore down Illinois.  Big difference.  Not necessarily a BCG fan though

No one was surprised.  We were just calling Currie out for padding a friend's pocket with KSU money.  The same way Weef and Krause used to do it.

pretty sure some were surprised about that.  and about currie padding a friend's pocket.  and that currie would lie.  and that frank would lie.  and that coaches are hired based on things other than wins.  it's been a regular rough ridin' naivete-o-rama around here lately.  it's caused by butthurt.

Yeah. Thing is there are plenty of things to legitimately be upset about.
