Frank Martin is trying to get a deal finalized to become South Carolina's next basketball coach, but the deal is not complete as of Friday night, a source close to Martin told GamecockCentral.com on Friday evening.
"I would say it's about 90 percent done," the source said, after GamecockCentral.com first reported on Friday that Martin had interviewed for the job on Monday. "But as for being a done deal, no, it's not."
The source said that Martin was trying to get the deal complete by Friday night because he is due in New York on Saturday. Martin will help with TV analysis of the NCAA tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
Martin has expressed heavy interest in replacing fired coach Darrin Horn, after five winning seasons at Kansas State. The Wildcats exited the NCAA tournament after winning their first-round game.
Athletic director Eric Hyman was not available for comment and previously said that he will not discuss the search until it's over. A USC spokesperson said that no press conference has been announced for the weekend or afterward.
Hyman was at Friday's baseball game. He did not comment on the search. He will attend USC's women's basketball game on Saturday in Fresno, Calif.
The Sporting News reported that USC has requested permission with Kansas State to speak to Martin. Kansas State athletic director John Currie nor Martin's agent, Richard Katz, have replied to repeated phone calls since Monday from GamecockCentral.com requesting the same information.
